Pharmacist Erin Miller proves the best medicine is caring deeply

Erin Miller got an early and dire start in understanding the importance of excellence in healthcare.

When she was 8-years-old, her brother, three years younger, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Doctors were able to give him 13 more years. 鈥淚 got to watch him grow up,鈥� Erin says. 聽鈥淗e is why I became interested in healthcare.鈥�

He passed at age 18.

“A few years later, Erin was expecting her first child and learned there was a genetic mutation on the maternal side to the disease that took her brother. 鈥淚 went to the doctor and it was just this fantastic experience,鈥� she says. 鈥淲e sat at this table together, at eye level, and she taught me and helped me so I could understand what was going on.鈥�

Erin says when she became a pharmacist, she modeled her doctor鈥檚 approach. 鈥淚 grab a chair or sit on the edge of the bed eye-to-eye and have real conversations. I always want to be the best I can be.鈥�

As Erin鈥檚 career progressed, she grew more interested in pharmacy management. 鈥淚 wanted to be where I knew the staff and professors cared as much as I cared.鈥�

Erin says MHA is exactly that kind of program.

鈥淚t has broadened my viewpoint of healthcare. I can see the silos within pharmacy that I didn鈥檛 even see working there,鈥� she says. 鈥淣ow I鈥檓 thinking out of the box and I can see how that will help me in my future. I know I made the right choice every time I go to class because I鈥檓 around people who are giving me the best chance at being my best.鈥�
