SI Leader wins Golich Award
Bella Thomas wins Best Student Employee at the 2026 Roadrunners Who Soar Ceremony
Nominated by her faculty partner, Shailesh Ambre, as well as a few of the students who attended her sessions, Thomas received the Golich Award for Staff and Administrative Excellent Award: Student Employee for her outstanding work and decication as a SupplementaI Instruction Leader for Fall 2025.
Bella joined the Supplemental Instruction program in the fall of 2024, and during her year of service she consistently went above and beyond in her role, bringing energy, preparation, and genuine care for student learning to every SI session she led.
Through her thoughtful facilitation, strong content knowledge, and welcoming presence, Bella created an inclusive environment where students felt supported and empowered to succeed. She modeled professionalism, leadership, and compassion, while also serving as a mentor and role model to both her peers and the students she supported. Bella鈥檚 commitment to excellence and her positive impact on the SI program make her more than deserving of this honor. What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program at 海角社区 supports students enrolled in traditionally difficult courses by offering free, regularly scheduled group study sessions that are facilitated by SI Leaders (current students who have previously succeeded in the course). SI Leaders support faculty by preparing weekly collaborative sessions that help students develop effective learning strategies while engaging with the most difficult course material.
The Supplemental Instruction program is more than happy to accommodate student requests for academic accommodations.

The Supplemental Instruction program at 海角社区 is certified by the International Center for Supplemental Instruction through UMKC.
Frequently Asked Questions
- SI is a non-remedial academic support for historically difficult courses with high failure/withdrawal rates.
- SI sessions are peer-led group study sessions that focus on both 鈥渨hat to learn鈥� and 鈥渉ow to learn,鈥�
- SI sessions are voluntary, regularly scheduled outside of class, and available to all students in the course.
- SI Leaders, trained peers who have successfully completed the course with an A or B, plan and lead collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction and meaningful discussion during SI sessions.
- ALL students who attend SI regularly get better grades and need to spend less time studying on their own.
- FREE casual space to study, ask questions, make mistakes, and deepen understanding of the material.
- Make new friends and compare notes while developing new study skills and strategies.
- Save time and frustration by regularly participating in an organized and focused study group.
- Collaborate with other students to process difficult material from the course (SI is not a re-lecture).
- Interact with content in new ways, apply concepts, and break up tough materials into understandable bits.
- Review for upcoming exams by sharing test-taking strategies and playing fun group games like Jeopardy.
- SI Leaders plan, facilitate, and organize time (so students only need to bring their notes to participate).

- To be an SI leader, you need to have taken the course you want to SI for and received a B+ or higher.
- You will need to commit to participating in an intensive kickoff training the week before the semester begins.
- You will need to commit to participating. in bi-weekly trainings throughout the semester.
- You will need to interview with the SI department.
- Regularly attend the class you are SIL for
- Hold 2 SI sessions per week
- Create detailed SI session plans using SI strategies
- Advertise your SI sessions in class and via email/Teams
- Commit to bi-weekly trainings on Friday afternoons from 1-3
- Commit to an intensive SI training program the week before the semester begins
- Meet with faculty regularly to get feedback and plan your sessions
- Be available to students through email or occasional meetings outside of SIL
- Participate in Peer Observations
