The first step to accessible presentations is to ensure your presentation file itself is accessible, (visit our Make Presentations Accessible page for guidance). Before your presentation, be sure to take the following into consideration.

Captions

Providing accurate and timely captions is a critical part of making presentations more accessible for everyone from English Language Learners to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.ÌýEnsure the accuracy of your captions by using a microphone so your captioner can hear you more clearly.

Note: captions are not an equivalent of sign language interpretation.ÌýÌý

Human-generated Captions:

  • More commonly referred to as Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captions
    • Captioners use short-hand keyboard to type what the speaker is saying
  • For in-person presentations, CART captions are usually presented on a separate screen
  • For presentations in Teams, ÌýÌý
    • Attendees can switch from CART to auto-generated or turn captions off
  • Human generated captions typically have a higher accuracy than auto generated captions
  • As it does require a specialized skill, CART captions have to be purchased through an approved vendor

Auto-Generated Captions:

  • Uses speech-to-text in order to automatically generate captions for the speaker
  • For in-person presentations, use ÌýÌý
  • For presentation in Teams, attendees can toggle captions on or off
  • Auto-generated captions will sometimes struggle with certain jargon and proper nouns
  • The accuracy of auto-generated captions is highly dependent on annunciation and pronunciation

Live Responses

Some considerations to keep in mind when choosing live response tools:

  • Not all attendees may have smart phones or tablets
  • Does participating require physicality such as standing up, raising hands or  cards, tapping on an area of an image, etc?ÌýÌý
  • Does participating require vision?

While there are a few digital polling tools, the IAG encourages faculty to help research and keep up-to-date on emerging accessible technology. Continue to use best teaching practices, but be aware that accommodations may be necessary until proactive accessible options are created.ÌýMost importantly, we encourage faculty to be innovative as they explore methods for collecting live responses.Ìý
