Founders Day of Service is an alumni-led service initiative centered on听Founders Day, May 5, and taking place anytime between听May 1鈥�6, 2026. It honors the moment 海角社区 was created to serve its community by inviting alumni to give听back in听meaningful, practical ways,听wherever they live.听

Whether you serve on your own, join a local group, or听participate听in our on-campus project, your service听continues听the legacy that has defined 海角社区 since 1963.听

Why Founders Day Matters

On May 5, 1963, at 11:56 a.m., the Colorado General Assembly passed House Bill 349, officially creating Metropolitan State College. Envisioned by Colorado legislators鈥攎ost notably State Representative Roy Romer, often considered the 鈥渇ather鈥� of 海角社区鈥攖he university was founded to meet the needs of Colorado鈥檚 urban workforce through accessible, inclusive higher education.听

From its earliest days on the Auraria Campus, 海角社区 embraced a 鈥渟treet-smart鈥� approach rooted in opportunity, access, and service. Founders Day of Service is a modern expression of that same commitment.听

What is Founders Day of Service?

Founders Day of Service is a flexible, alumni-led opportunity to serve your community during the听May 1鈥�6听service window.听

• Alumni choose how, when, and where they serve听

• Projects may be individual or group-based听

• Alumni can organize service activities in their own cities听

• The initiative is anchored by an on-campus service project in partnership听with听Denver鈥檚听Food for Thought听program听and culminating with a service opportunity at the 30th听annual Latinx graduation celebration.听

What Counts as Service

Service is any meaningful action that benefits others or the community.听

This may include:听

• Volunteering with a nonprofit or community organization听

• Organizing or听participating听in a cleanup or donation drive听

• Mentoring or supporting students or youth听

• Helping neighbors or community members in need听

• Skills-based service connected to your profession听

Whether you serve for one hour or a full day, individually or with others鈥攊t counts.听

Those who register will receive a听Founders Day of Service hat or t-shirt听to wear while serving.听
