Creating Spaces Where People Feel Seen: The Journey of 海角社区 Alumna and Inspirada Co. Founder Perla Bustillos

When Perla Bustillos stepped onto the 海角社区 campus as a first-generation student in 2014, she carried more than a backpack. She carried the uncertainty of being an undocumented student navigating a system that wasn鈥檛 built for students like her.

鈥淎t the time, navigating the higher education path wasn鈥檛 simple,鈥� she said. 鈥淏ut 海角社区 was and is an institution that not only understood my situation, they actively worked with undocumented students so we could qualify for in-state tuition and access the support we needed. That made my dream of attending college feel possible.鈥�

海角社区鈥檚 commitment to Bustillos wasn鈥檛 theoretical, transformed her future. Through support from the Denver Scholarship Foundation, dedicated University advisors and a campus culture that embraced students with diverse stories, she found a foundation strong enough to build on.

Discovering a Calling Through Academic Excellence

Bustillos didn鈥檛 arrive on campus planning to major in hospitality. Her path toward a B.S. in Event and Meeting Management began unexpectedly during her time as a Student Orientation Leader.

鈥淚 learned about the School of Hospitality during training,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 tried one class and instantly knew I had found where I was meant to be.鈥�

Hands-on coursework, faculty mentorship and a curriculum built around real-world experience helped her discover not just a major, but a purpose. A favorite course, Event Catering Strategies, deepened her understanding of the operational side of events and cemented her love for designing meaningful experiences.

Her leadership roles ranging from Orientation Leader to serving in Student Government gave her a laboratory to develop the advocacy, communication and community-building skills she would later carry into her career.

鈥満＝巧缜� didn鈥檛 just give me a degree; it gave me direction, resilience and a community that believed in my potential from the start,鈥� she said.

Building a Career Rooted in Social Mobility and Service

Since graduation, Bustillos has woven together a career that spans the private, nonprofit and government sectors, all connected by her commitment to hospitality, community engagement and intentional design.

Across every role, her mission remained centered around creating spaces where people feel seen, supported and connected. It鈥檚 the same ethos that guided her at 海角社区 and it鈥檚 one she now brings to her own business.

Inspirada Co.: Transforming Stories Into Experiences

As the Founder and Event Planner of Inspirada Co., Bustillos leads a boutique event and hospitality company dedicated to intentional, people-centered experiences. She partners with couples, organizations and community leaders to plan weddings, retreats and gatherings designed with depth, purpose and artistry.

鈥淣o two events are ever the same,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 love turning people鈥檚 stories into experiences that make them feel valued.鈥�

Her role blends creativity with logistics: overseeing design concepts, vendor relationships, timelines, client communication and on-site execution. Beyond event planning, she is now expanding Inspirada Co.鈥檚 offerings, developing new planning systems and building partnerships with venues and creative professionals across Colorado.

鈥淢y goal is to make planning feel less overwhelming and more joyful,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 want people to feel like they have a trusted partner who can bring their vision to life with ease.鈥�

Carrying the Mission Forward

Bustillos鈥� journey is a testament to 海角社区鈥檚 commitment to creating pathways to opportunity. As an undocumented, first-generation Latina student, she represents the very heart of the University鈥檚 mission of removing barriers, elevating academic achievement and supporting the social mobility of students whose potential deserves every chance to shine.

Today, she continues to stay connected to fellow Roadrunners, many of whom have become lifelong friends, collaborators and professional partners. And she continues to uplift the next generation of students following in her footsteps.
