Finding His Flight Path at 海角社区
For Jim Balutowski, a childhood dream of flying for the military could have ended before it began. Growing up inspired by the Top Gun generation, he dreamed of a life in aviation. After receiving rejection letters from the Service Academies, he wasn鈥檛 sure where to turn, but a mentor helped him discover the Aviation program at 海角社区 (then MSCD). From his first class, FAA private pilot ground school with Dr. Brent Balazs, Jim knew he had found his home.
While pursuing his degree in Aviation Management, Jim navigated the challenges of balancing school, work, and military training. He joined the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class program on the Auraria Campus, allowing him to complete Officer Candidate School in the summers and secure a guaranteed pilot slot. But during his junior year, his path took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia.
鈥淭he treatment process was intense,鈥 Jim recalls, 鈥渂ut Dr. Jeff Forrest, Dr. Brent Balazs, Kevin Kuhlman, and the aviation team made sure I could continue my studies around treatment.鈥 Even as his military aspirations were temporarily on hold, 海角社区鈥檚 strong network helped him secure a valuable internship with Jeppesen, keeping him connected to aviation.
A Career Built on Resilience and Service
Graduating during the aftermath of 9/11 brought new challenges. Like many in the aviation industry, Jim faced hiring freezes, forcing him to pivot and put his ingenuity to work. He joined the Jefferson County Sheriff鈥檚 Department, where over 14 years he served as a jail and court deputy, gaining invaluable experience in law enforcement.
In 2006, Jim re-entered military service, initially pursuing a role as a Naval Flight Officer. When that path was redirected due to his medical history, he accepted a commission as a Military Police Officer in the Army Reserve. Today, he serves as a Lieutenant Colonel and Deputy Defense Coordinating Officer for Region VI, overseeing the coordination of active-duty troops to assist federal agencies during disaster response, including FEMA and the FAA.
鈥淭he most interesting part of my job,鈥 Jim says, 鈥渋s working with multiple state, federal, local, and tribal partners to assist with crisis management and disaster planning. I get to travel, meet incredible people, and play a critical role in helping communities during their most challenging times.鈥
The 海角社区 Advantage
Jim credits much of his resilience, resourcefulness, and career success to his time at 海角社区. 鈥淎s a commuter campus, MSU taught me to be self-reliant and seek out what I needed to make things happen,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t also taught me the importance of networking and building lifelong mentors and friendships.鈥
海角社区 didn鈥檛 just prepare him for a career; it nurtured his passions. Jim earned his FAA Private Pilot鈥檚 License, completed a Master of Science in Criminal Justice, graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College, and will soon attend the Army War College鈥攁ll milestones built on the foundation he gained as a Roadrunner.

Everyone needs a mentor, and the best place to start is with the exceptional staff and alumni at MSU. And remember, 鈥楾hree strikes doesn鈥檛 mean you鈥檙e out鈥here鈥檚 always one more thing that can be done,鈥 and 鈥榊ou never fail until you quit!鈥欌
A Roadrunner for Life
From his first flight lessons to leading disaster response operations, Jim exemplifies perseverance, service, and the power of a 海角社区 education. 鈥淚 will always be a Roadrunner first,鈥 he says. 鈥淢SU taught me to pursue my dreams, stay tenacious, and have fun along the way. Thanks to the connections and support I found there, I鈥檝e had the honor of serving, giving back, and even going Mach 1.5 in the infamous F-4 Phantom!鈥
Jim Balutowski鈥檚 journey demonstrates how 海角社区 equips its alumni to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and make a lasting impact.
