What is translanguaging?

This short video highlights what translanguaging is as a theory, a pedagogy, and a stance. It also explains why science teachers should welcome translanguaging in their classrooms.

This video will support in-service and pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and administrators who would like to better understand how to customize science curriculum to incorporate translanguaging pedagogies.

Customize Science Lessons for Translanguaging Pedagogies

In this video, four science teachers strategically plan for translanguaging to enhance student sensemaking in upcoming NGSS-aligned lessons. They follow a four-part process: 1) discuss what students are 鈥榝iguring out鈥 in their upcoming NGSS-aligned science lessons, 2) identify which Science and Engineering Practices align with their lessons, 3) describe how the curriculum expects students to use language, and 4) strategically customize tools and routines for whole-group and small-group interactions to include and welcome translanguaging.

In this video, Jos茅 Antonio Berm煤dez, a 5th grade teacher at Bryant Webster Dual Language ECE-8 School in Denver Public Schools, demonstrates how he strategically customized a science lesson to incorporate translanguaging through the following tools and routines: explicitly welcome translanguaging, bilingual word wall, bilingual sentence stems, bilingual student materials, strategic pairing of students by home language.

Translanguaging Pedagogies in Action: Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information

In this video, Erin Fleischman, a 4th Grade Teacher at Newlon Elementary School in Denver Public Schools, strategically customized a science lesson to incorporate translanguaging for student sensemaking through the following tools and routines to support NGSS Science and Engineering Practices: explicitly welcome and engage with translanguaging, preview sensemaking words/phrases bilingually, use gestures to support key science concepts, provide students agency in language for reading and writing, provide and preview bilingual sentence stems to support communication.

In this video, Erica Schliemann Dur谩n, a 6th grade teacher at Bryant Webster Dual Language ECE-8 School in Denver Public Schools, demonstrates how she strategically customized a science lesson to incorporate translanguaging for student sensemaking through the following tools and routines: model and welcome translanguaging, consistent use of visuals and bilingual sentence starters, elevate bilingual responses in whole class conversations, purposefully grouping students by home language, and bilingual elements on data sheets.

Debrief Science Lessons with Translanguaging Pedagogies

In this video, four science teachers debrief lesson enactment and student work after strategically customizing their lessons to include translanguaging pedagogies to enhance student sensemaking around the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. Teachers follow a three-part process: 1) carefully review student work with an asset-based lens to focus on what students are doing with language and science, 2) reflect on translanguaging customizations that support student sensemaking, and 3) identify small adjustments to make to translanguaging customizations during upcoming science lessons to further support student sensemaking.

Advice about Starting with Translanguaging in Science

In this video, members of the Dynamic Languaging CoDesign Collaborative share advice for teachers who are just starting to customize science lessons to welcome and include translanguaging. They reflect on their experiences on customizing their lessons to embrace translanguaging as a core asset for science sensemaking. They address common concerns and how to successfully overcome them.
