Most people who search for an instructional design certificate already work in a field where learning and training happen: HR, education, health care, nonprofit, corporate L&D, the military. They’re not starting from scratch. They’re looking for formal credentials and a portfolio to move into or up in instructional design work specifically.
Training and development specialists, the BLS occupational category that includes most instructional design roles, held about 452,000 jobs nationally in 2024, with a median annual wage of $65,850, according to the . Corporate roles pay meaningfully more than education roles in this field. Employers increasingly look for candidates who combine industry or subject matter experience with formal instructional design credentials, which is the gap this certificate is built to fill.
The post-baccalaureate version of this certificate includes EDT 4090 Instructional Prototyping, a hands-on capstone where you design and build a real instructional artifact. In a field where employers and independent industry research consistently show that a portfolio carries as much weight as a credential, finishing with actual work to show is a practical advantage, not just an academic requirement.
You need a conferred bachelor’s degree to enroll, but it can be in any field. If you already work in training, curriculum development, teaching, HR, or any role where helping people learn is part of the job, this certificate gives you the credentials and the portfolio to move into instructional design work directly. If you don’t yet have a bachelor’s degree, the undergraduate version of this certificate is designed for you.
