“Monday Message!”

Good morning, team Student Affairs!

It is the last week before commencement.听 Students are in finals, we have several end-of-year events still to attend, and the excitement is growing.听 If you鈥檙e like me, you鈥檙e now running on fumes and good vibes鈥�.but we鈥檙e almost there!!!听听听 Since we could not have our Town Hall today (I hope you鈥檒l all participate in our Executive Director of Financial Aid interviews!) 鈥� I wanted to write with a few announcements.

First, we did a BIG thing on Saturday morning.听 At the conclusion of our first-ever Native and Indigenous Student Graduation, Dr. Davidson announced the new Indigenous & Native People鈥檚 Grant. This grant will ensure that Colorado residents, including those awarded resident status thanks to SB21-029, who are enrolled with one of 574 federally-recognized Native nations, will have their full tuition and fees covered at the undergraduate level.听 Read more about this new program here:听 听听Huge thanks to the Native & Indigenous Student Alliance and the student leaders for their work to make the events of this weekend possible, and to the staff in Financial Aid and enrollment who worked furiously to build the grant initiative!

I am so proud to work at a University that leans in to radical access, and honors the legacy of the first peoples who inhabited the land on which our campus is built.听 I am also committed to continuing this work and community-engagement.听 Watch out for future announcements!

• We have more scholarships to review by May 15^th! We have almost 700 applications that need a second reviewer; if you have capacity to review applications, please reach out to Josh Harris听by end of day today (5/9).
• Executive Director of Financial Aid University Open Forum is happening today (May 9^th from 2:00-3:00PM in JSSB-400)鈥攑lease join us and provide your feedback.
• The Chief Enrollment Officer search is still underway; thank you for your patience with this process. As soon as we identify candidates to bring onto campus, please know we will provide opportunities for you to interview as well.

“Good Vibes Only: Monday Edition”

Good morning, Student Affairs!

It鈥檚 been a minute since one of my Monday messages, but after our absolutely AWESOME Open House this past Saturday morning, I felt the need to express thanks and ponder the future.

First, I want to give a massively huge shoutout to the Admissions team who led this Open House.听 HUGE shoutout to Alysha Rowzee, the event coordinator, and folks from across the recruiting and operations teams in Admissions:听 Marlynn Rocha-Vasquez, Amanda Ryder, Victor Mata, Rene Haro-Sipes, Bethany Perez, Amy Moody (who ensured I refilled my coffee!), Erin Ulrich, Diana Flores, and Ashly Carrera.听 It was great spending time with you Saturday morning and seeing your badass skills at work.

I also want to thank the dozens and dozens of you that I saw throughout the day, volunteering your time, staffing tables, chatting with students and their families, or leading sessions.听 These Open House events truly represent the best of our 鈥渃ommunity-connected鈥� values as an access institution, as an HSI, and as an institution that cares for our students and their communities.听 I was so proud to work with you all that day.

As we all continue to work diligently to stop the steep enrollment declines we鈥檝e faced over the last two years, I want to share some recent successes that tell me we are on the right path to being more strategic in how we engage new and returning students to help them meet their educational goals:

• Thanks to a robust communications campaign, the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships saw a massive increase in scholarship applications submitted this year.听 They鈥檝e also seen noticeable jumps in FAFSA/CASFA submissions.听 Similarly, this communications plan has also reduced calls to the Call Center, allowing our crack team there to stay on top of the volume coming in to them through phones and email.听 When you see our Financial Aid colleagues out and about on campus, please thank them for everything they are doing.听 I can鈥檛 tell you how proud I am of the work this team has done in the last year to support our Roadrunners.
• A few weeks ago, we saw some troubling signs of our transfer pipeline slipping.听 Thanks to the work of the transfer recruiting team, led by Charita Thompson, the transfer evaluation team, led by Camden Farmer, and the transfer services team, led by Tiffani Baldwin, we鈥檝e gone from double-digit percentages down in applications to a small increase in applications since last year!
• Two weeks ago, we officially launched the Roadrunner Promise.听 This program already ensures 30% of our students pay $0 in tuition and fees at 海角社区 鈥� as long as they have an EFC of 2400 or less.听 The new part of the program will extend that promise to first-time, full-time students with an adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less.听 Designing and rolling out this program took considerable work from our Financial Aid staff, our data team, our Admissions/Slate team, and our Marketing and Communications colleagues.听 Not only does this program exhibit our CADRE values as an institution, but it could also help some students who want to graduate in four years do so.

Please know that I see the hard work you鈥檙e all engaged in to support our new and continuing students 鈥� from enrollment to SEW to C2.听 I also see the way you support each other and am so very grateful.听 I look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks on additional strategies to build on this momentum.

“Monday Missive: Community”

Good morning, Roadrunners!

It鈥檚 been a few months since one of my Monday emails, but I had some thoughts that I wanted to share with you all.

Last week, I was reminded of the importance of being in community with others.听 In my entire professional career, I鈥檝e been lucky enough to only miss one in-person national NASPA conference since 2021 (thanks to institutions that invested in my professional development).听 I knew that I missed seeing folks in 2020 and 2021, but I didn鈥檛 know how much I needed that community until I was with them last week in Baltimore (along with a few other Roadrunners!).From the NASPA staff that I interned with in 2001 (including one staffer who was my undergraduate advisee back in the day!), to the professionals I worked with as co-chair of the Gender and Sexuality Knowledge Community, to the leaders from the Region 2 Advisory Board that I worked with for almost a decade, the time spent reconnecting with my community filled my cup of joy.听 For me, that reconnecting validated so much of the experience all of us are having right now 鈥� the issues, the drama, the anxiety, and yes, the wins and the successes.

Our students are no different.听 Their connections to community 鈥� their families (including chosen families!), neighborhoods, faith communities, and more 鈥� sustain them and support them in their educational endeavors.听 We know from the literature on successful H.S.I.s that community connections are vitally important.听 So, here鈥檚 my question of the week:

鈥淲hat would it look like if every single aspect of our work was community-connected?鈥�

In the coming weeks, I challenge each of you to personally consider this question and bring those ideas to your department for a conversation.听 Inside that question, I think, lies to the solution to so many of our challenges.听 And remember, community isn鈥檛 just important to our students鈥�it matters to ourselves and our colleagues.

“Your Professional Journey”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

I鈥檝e been thinking a lot lately about 鈥淭he Great Resignation.鈥澨� The articles that I鈥檓 seeing place causation for this mass migration of American workers on burnout, family responsibilities, salary upheaval, worker dissatisfaction with low-wage / high-volume careers, or some sort of massive group re-think of the nature of work.听 I believe there is truth to this, and, when coupled with the loss of over 780,000 Americans in the last two years, each of us are forced to think about our place in the world and how we want to live and work.

As we begin to understand The Great Resignation, folks are also positing solutions.听 Maybe it is higher wages, maybe it is lower workloads, maybe it is better education鈥�.lots of ideas get tossed around daily in the media.听 In Student Affairs at 海角社区, I want our work culture to be family-friendly, to be flexible to the extent possible, to be a place of integration rather than separation, to be a place where each of us travels our own professional journey with support AND accountability.

So that I can better understand how you are thinking about your own professional journey at 海角社区, our team has put together a very quick, optional survey that I鈥檇 like to ask each full time member of the branch to complete.听 It should take less than 10 minutes and will help us know where to focus our time and resources on better supporting you, our team members.

We will only use this data at the aggregate level to better understand trends; we will not be identifying individuals.

Post Holiday Blues & New Roads Forward”

Dear Colleagues:

This morning, I watched as my parents pulled out of my garage (at 6am 鈥� early start!) after a wonderful week spent with them exploring Colorado.听 Even though I鈥檝e only lived in the Centennial State for 3.5 years, it is still pretty cool to introduce people to new parts of our communities.听 My mom鈥檚 favorite thing is to travel 鈥渙n a road I鈥檝e never been on!鈥� This time we took on Rt. 285 to Fairplay, Collegiate Peaks Highway to Leadville, and Rt. 34 from Estes Park to Longmont.

It seems to me that we are all traveling roads we鈥檝e never been on these days.听 All of us are navigating what is likely the new normal of pandemic management.听 We are all learning how to pivot back and forth between working in our offices and working from home.听 We are confronted with the outcomes of two court cases, in two jurisdictions, that sent opposing messages about justice in our country and we have to reconcile that.

And here at 海角社区 we are traveling new roads.听 Our Financial Aid team is working hard to both modernize their infrastructure and think about new systems to deploy crucial resources to our students.听 Have they ever given away this much money in a 2 year period?听 Our Dean of Students team, including the Care Center and Conduct staff, are managing a high level of critical needs from our students AND holding them accountable to new policies.听 The C2 team is working hard to understand 鈥淭he Great Resignation鈥� and what that means for industry partnerships now and in the future.

We are traveling most of these roads without maps.听 As my parents and I drove around Denver鈥檚 complicated highway system, my Dad asked me how I knew where I was going.听 Some of it was by memory, but mostly it was thanks to my car鈥檚 navigational system.听 I imagine that 20, 30 years ago, Denver鈥檚 roads weren鈥檛 quite so complicated or crowded and it would have been easier to navigate.听 As our lives got more complicated, we and our technology evolved to meet the demands of our times.听 These days, most of us can punch in an address and our cars tell us where to go.听 Before that, we printed out directions from MapQuest and tried to read the paper while driving.听 Before that鈥�.I suppose we had hard copy maps!听 I don鈥檛 remember these, but we must have used them to get to where we were going.听 We likely stopped to ask for directions more often, but also travelled shorter distances than we do now.

Today鈥檚 work resembles the evolution of navigation.听 We are evolving.听 We are changing to meet the needs of today and hopefully, plan for the future.听 It is difficult work, both emotionally and intellectually.听 As leaders 鈥� and I include each of you in this label – 听I hope that we are thinking about how to support each other through this work. 听Are we checking in on each other?听 Are we setting achievable goals?听 Are we using the right data to measure our progress and our need to plan?

These are tough questions, ones that will take time and energy to answer.听 Remember 鈥� we are in our 鈥渞ecovery鈥� year, so let鈥檚 take the time we need to take to find the solutions we need to find!

“When Will This End?”

October 11, 2021

Good morning, Student Affairs Roadrunners 鈥�

Mid-October has always been one of my favorite seasons, especially in Colorado.听 Not only are the golden aspens showing up all over our state, but the weather is getting cooler and that means鈥�.sweater weather!

But, it is also allergy season and this year promises to be a confusing one for those of us showing symptoms.听 I developed a cough last Monday that, by its sound alone, I knew wasn鈥檛 normal allergies.听 So, I went to the Health Center at Auraria for a COVID19 test, was in and out in 15 minutes thanks to the incredibly professional staff, and came home to wait for the results.听 While that test came back negative, I subsequently developed a fever and took myself to Urgent Care on Thursday.听 This time, the test came back positive for the dreaded breakthrough case of COVID19.听 Since then, I鈥檝e been resting, taking time off, and noticing the strangest symptoms ever course through my body (Cold feet.听 No smell.听 No taste.听 Chest pains. Sneezing.听 Runny nose.).听 I鈥檇 like to offer a huge thank you to the team in Student Affairs who took things off my plate so I could rest, checked on me letting me know folks were concerned, and sending me good jokes to cheer me up.听 I *think* I鈥檓 on the other side of it now, and will be able to return to work next week.

In trying to find some meaning out of this, I鈥檝e thought of a few things:

• Yup, Change Is.听 I had packed schedules on Thursday and Friday, meetings I and others had spent time scheduling, preparing for, and that were crucial to moving forward our university鈥檚 agenda.听 But, I was also sick.听 At first, I told myself I wasn鈥檛 so sick that I couldn鈥檛 hop on Teams or Zoom and carry on.听 But, it was very clear my body needed the rest.听 That put things into perspective.听 I was also clear, in retrospect, that the world moves on quite fine without me in the room thanks to a stellar team of Student Affairs Roadrunners!
• We鈥檙e still in this.听 This pandemic is not over; not by a longshot.听 As we move forward, grace and flexibility are still the key words to live by.听 None of us know fully what鈥檚 going on in each other鈥檚 lives.听 We are all managing stressors that our bodies and our psyches have not been prepared to deal with.听 听As you prepare to respond to that comment, to that email鈥�.are you coming from a place of care?听 Are you offering grace and flexibility?听 (PS 鈥� that grace and flexibility needs to be directed inward as well.听 Why blame someone else when I can blame myself? Argh.)
• In this nest, we support each other.听 We鈥檝e long known our work was interdependent, and as student affairs professionals we know our work is human-centered.听 But I am always humbled when folks reach out to offer support to me because they truly care.
• I was also struck that, as I went 鈥減ublic鈥� on my personal social media about my diagnosis, dozens of friends (including my 11^th grade history teacher!) reached out to share that they had had similar diagnoses in recent months, what symptoms they exhibited, and what seemed to work.听 I was floored because I had no idea.听 So, in some sense, as the pandemic evolves, 听bringing this out of the darkness allows us to share, support, and thrive through community.听 I guess this is a very different kind of National Coming Out Day message!

So, as you start your Monday, please remember these things.听 We鈥檝e got a long road of recovery ahead, and recovery needs meaning-making to ensure it sticks.

This wasn鈥檛 the message I planned to write to you today.听 Since today is both National Coming Out Day and Indigenous People鈥檚 Day, I wanted to write about the dual emotions of both celebrating and remembering, elevating and honoring.听 As always, our colleagues and our students are holding wonderful events.听 I encourage you to drop by the Indigenous People鈥檚 Day event this afternoon at 4PM (see attached), or the 鈥淚 Love My UndocuQueer People 2021鈥� event this Thursday!

“Change Is.”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

This week, I鈥檝e been thinking a lot about change.听 I鈥檓 reminded of the first message many of you heard from me, my 鈥渃hange is鈥� talk at our very first semester kick off back in January 2019 as the Student Affairs branch.听 Back then, I was responding to what I was hearing from you 鈥� a general fatigue of change initiatives and a wish for a more stable experience at 海角社区.

Right now it seems that Colorado is just bent on reminding us that change happens all around us.听 From the gorgeous golden hues of the aspens as you drive along I-70 in the mountains, to the cranes that continually pop up all over the skyline, to the kickoff of football season, we are reminded that cycles come and go, that our world evolves, frankly, whether we want it to or not.听 听And at the same time, I鈥檝e heard from many friends and colleagues as we returned to our workplaces a desire to create a better, more healthy professional life.听 That鈥檚 change that we intentionally create.听 Both types of change are useful as a university community.

We spend most of our time creating change as a University community.听 From efforts to strengthen student success, to building strategy to garner the resources we know we need to meet our mission, most of us spend huge amounts of our day building change initiatives.听 And it pays off.听 Last week, 海角社区 was awarded the competitive Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award.听 This award recognizes the work that each of you do to dismantle systems of oppression, systems that actively minoritize our students, and support students鈥� learning and development.听 When I arrived at 海角社区, I was struck by the strategy embedded within our efforts to become a Hispanic-Serving Institution, particularly the work of the Transfer Task Force who laid out a comprehensive plan for 海角社区 to better serve over half of our population.听 We continue to activate the recommendations of that task force, and build upon them by integrating the expertise of new members of our community.听 Similarly, last year, I asked each department head to work with their staff to create two draft plans, how that department can work toward realizing the university鈥檚 anti-racist commitment, and how that department embraces the concept of servingness to live our role as an H.S.I.听 Each step of the way, I鈥檝e been proud of the work of this team as you embrace the strategic collaboration and efforts to engage in the work of creating a university built for our students.听 听Recognitions like the award mentioned above are just icing on the cake, watching our students thrive is the real pay off.

And yet, what likely drags us down each day is the change we cannot control, the change that happens to us.听 COVID19 was certainly one of those changes; it continues to stymie what we wish we could do with what we know we must do to keep our communities safe.听 And even as our team has rallied to create structures to better support students and each other, I know that many of you have felt the weight of those restructures as happening to you rather than working with you.听 So, with the hopes of proffering some strategies to help us navigate change, here are my top 5 methods:

1. I try to remember WHY change is happening, or ask those creating the change why they have initiated the change.听 If I can keep that top-level idea in my head, it helps me bear the weight of the day-to-day a little easier.
2. As someone who often drives change, I have to remember to be as transparent as possible, to give folks as much notice as possible, and to engage their wisdom and expertise to guide the process.听 I was so proud of the outcome of our work to restructure the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion, but that took many hours of dialogue, conversation, and two very lengthy workshops with the full staff to get there.
3. Change is nothing without assessment and accountability.听 Whether I鈥檓 on the inside or outside of a change process, I鈥檓 always looking for the indicators of our success (or not).听 Change for change鈥檚 sake is not a good idea; change must be initiated to create growth or correction.听 So, it should be easy to identify the ways we鈥檒l measure that success and hold ourselves accountable to those metrics.听 But, we too often think the process is the thing; not the outcome.听 It鈥檚 both.
4. Long-term change strategies will beat short-term strategies each and every time, but the short-term strategies will take up more oxygen and energy because, to quote Dr. Davidson, they are the 鈥渁lligator closest to the boat.鈥澨� In student affairs, we are often operating on a year-by-year basis.听 What would it look like if we gave ourselves the grace of a multi-year strategy to build change?听 Yes, our students need change TODAY, but I think we鈥檝e proven that short-term solutions might be the easy answer, but they are not the best answer.
5. Finally, I try to remember that my reaction to change will play out in both psychological and physical ways.听 I look for signs about how I鈥檓 doing in meetings, after work when I鈥檓 reflecting, and in my general outlook.听 If I start hitting the snooze button in the mornings more than twice (I know!), something鈥檚 not right.听 If I鈥檓 short-tempered or more aggressive than usual, something鈥檚 not right.听 听Once I realize how I鈥檓 reacting, I can deploy some self-care strategies.听 My favorites these days are immersing myself in a good (fiction) book, taking the dog for a long walk without earbuds, taking a long hike with someone who will truly listen and engage with me, or having a heart-to-heart with my boss on what鈥檚 going on with me (yes, even with the President!).

These are my strategies.听 They work for me, but might not work for you.听 I鈥檇 love to know what you do to manage change you create and change that happens to you.

“On Leadership Development”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners

How did you spend your weekend?听 Given the glorious weather in Colorado this weekend, maybe you got outside for some recreation? Or maybe you spent time with kiddos in the park or playing games?听 Maybe you visited one of the cool art shows around town these days (Meow Wolf, Van Gogh Live, etc)?听 Or maybe you sat on your couch and binge watched Ted Lasso?

Me?听 I hiked the Mount Flora Trail on Berthoud Pass (wear a coat! It was cold!), caught up on 鈥淭he Chair鈥� on Netflix, and finished my book (鈥淏roken People鈥� by Sam Lansky).听 But, the highlight of my weekend was spending a couple of hours with some awesome students and that鈥檚 what I want to share with you.

This weekend, the hosted their first ever 鈥渋LEAD鈥� student leadership retreat, inviting student leaders from TSAC, organizations, fraternity & sorority life, and more.听 Kudos to the entire team of professional staff and GA鈥檚 who put this together 鈥� y鈥檃ll rock.听 I had the chance to chat with the students for a few minutes to share my thoughts on the importance of leadership development.听 That got me thinking about what this means to all of us professionals鈥�.

So, let鈥檚 start first with a definition of leadership. I鈥檝e always found the definition from the Social Change Model of Leadership Development compelling:听 鈥淟eadership is a process of committed individuals coming together to create change for the common good.鈥澨� Thus, anyone engaging in that process is a 鈥渓eader.鈥澨� We often say at 海角社区 that our goal is 鈥渓eaders leading.鈥澨� Based on the definition above, and this aspiration, here are some things I think are true:

• We can all be leaders, if we focus on engaging in the process with a common purpose and focus on positive change for our communities.
• This process requires a tremendous array of skills to ensure success.听 So, whether you鈥檙e someone who enjoys completing tasks, handling organizational minutiae, standing up in front of a group and presenting, or even supporting others by flexing your empathy and emotional intelligence, as long as you are bringing your skills to the team, you are, in fact, leading.
• One of the biggest issues we face is a lack of understanding the 鈥渨hy鈥� of our teams.听 Why are we here today?听 Why are we engaging in this work?听 Why does what we do matter?听 Why are we seeking to create change?听 Over the next few weeks, that鈥檚 going to be what I remind myself鈥�.to identify the 鈥渨hy鈥� as groups come together.
• I may be a leader, but in order to be a successful leader, I need to always refine and develop my skills.听 In any situation, I may need to flex a different skill set to be of maximum service to the group and our vision for the future.听 That鈥檚 why I invest in better understanding myself, seeking out feedback, and engaging in opportunities that help me develop or cultivate new and existing skills.

Folks, we are at an inflection point at 海角社区.听 Our students are incredible.听 They are the future we鈥檝e been hoping for.听 They are going to do incredible things for our communities.听 听As I鈥檝e shared in the past, my vision for student affairs at 海角社区 is that we come together to dismantle and reassemble the student experience so that we are supporting our students鈥� learning and success.听 This is tough work, and I know it is why you leaders are all here at this university at this time.听 And so remember鈥�

…this is a process.
…this requires collaboration.
鈥�this requires commitment.
鈥�this is about positive change.

There鈥檚 no group of committed professionals I鈥檇 rather do this work with.听 Have a TERRIFIC Monday and a fabulous week, y鈥檃ll!

“9/11 Re-Memories: A Tuesday Edition”

Good morning, Student Affairs Roadrunners:

At 8:47am September 11, 2001, I looked at my watch.听 The train had just pulled into the Chambers Street subway station, under the World Trade Center, and I thought to myself, 鈥渨ell, I鈥檓 going to be late today.鈥�

That day was a Tuesday, much like today, with blue skies and comfortable temperature.听 It was one week after my duties with Orientation had wrapped up, and I was started to learn my new job as a Program Coordinator in the College Activities Office at Barnard College.听 I had jumped on the A Train at Nostrand Avenue, later than usual, and was standing (probably listening to my Sony Discman) by the doors to the subway car.听 Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.听 Thirty minutes later, when I walked into the Student Center, it was clear that nothing was ordinary.听 听听We tried to maintain normalcy; we even conducted our staff meeting at 10am.听 But as we watched Broadway, and the auto traffic started clogging the northbound lanes while the southbound lanes became a constant stream of emergency vehicles, sirens blaring, we knew we were only postponing the inevitable realization that something major was happening to us.

, and spent 20 years processing and trying to make meaning.听 I was too new a New Yorker to have much connection to the buildings (other than using them as directional guides to figure out uptown from downtown), but I do remember being in awe that I was able to get home on the subway that evening.听 I remember the trash that was everywhere for months 鈥� papers floating in the air, grey muck lining the streets, and the smell.听 I remember that we were all kinder to each other, for a while.听 I remember the absolute disconnect, the feeling that the news must be wrong, because 150 blocks north, everything seemed fine.听 And then, I remember the hatred that emerged from trying to understand.听 The corner stores being looted and destroyed simply because the owners were 鈥渙ther鈥� or the 鈥渟ee something, say something鈥� marketing scheme that taught us to look around with suspicion.

As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches this weekend, many of us will be confronting our own memories.听 For some of you, the attack was the first major event you remember in our world.听 Some of you were too young to remember, or weren鈥檛 even born yet! For others, it marked the start of a twenty year war where you were deployed to the Middle East. 听I鈥檓 sure some of you felt the sting of hatred as many Americans blamed entire religions or populations for the events of that day.听 It changed the way we think about travel, the way we think about being in large spaces.听 听I hope that you will participate in the 9/11 remembrance activities planned by our colleagues in CMEI (see attached), as a way of processing your own experiences and supporting our community as we all seek to remember and reflect and rebuild.

As I begin my work-week, I鈥檒l be thinking about what I will always carry as a result of being in that city on that day:

• An instinct to gather during crisis.
• The knowledge that truth combats fear, and that communication is our greatest asset.
• Working, and working hard, to ensure that crisis response does not create new crises of blame, prejudice, or nationalism.
• Trauma is generational.听 The trauma of 9/11 lives in our policies, our programs, our bodies.

As we work through this week, and next, I encourage you to share stories, to gather, to remember.听 Only through fully debriefing our experiences can we make new meaning from them, a meaning that hopefully moves us toward a brighter, and better, future.

“In Relationship”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners 鈥�

1 week to go!听 Some of you are deep in student training, others are prepping for big events and programs to take place (Hi Diana Ibarra!), while others are furiously trying to respond to the avalanche of student emails, calls, and contact points.听 听海角社区 knows how hard this team works to support our entire community, and I look forward to celebrating later on.

In the last few weeks, many of us have voiced feelings of finding it difficult, or challenging, to 鈥渞econnect鈥� or 鈥渞econstruct鈥� our ways of doing business.听 We made jokes about newfound social anxiety or the inability to make small talk, we鈥檝e commiserated about the parts of Teams technology that we enjoyed during meetings, and we鈥檝e had to navigate lots of tough conversations about vaccines and masks.听 I鈥檝e been thinking about relationships and how they impact our work, and why they are more important than ever as we kick off Fall 2021.

As I look back at my three years at 海角社区, I see a ton of evidence where good relationships have positively impacted our strategies:

• Faculty connections in the C2 led by Pamela Ansburg听resulted in almost 100 faculty stepping forward to join a workshop to transform their courses.
• Enrollment and Marketing have built a strong working relationship to ensure we are always thinking about supporting our student pipeline.
• Our Admissions Recruiters maintain extensive community-based relationships that allow us to be the school of choice for so many students.
• Our Student Care Center continues to be a much-sought resource for faculty and other community members dealing with tricky student situations.
• And so, so, so many more.

And there are lots of examples of where a relationship that wasn鈥檛 so strong negatively impacted our ability to meet a challenge.听 Whether it was a failure to build trust before initiating change, a less-than-perfect attempt at inclusive leadership, or the assumption of intent鈥�we can all identify times when we鈥檝e failed to achieve something because we neglected a relationship.听 I know I can.

So when this 鈥� or 鈥渢he little things that affect our work relationships鈥� came across my Twitter feed, I flagged it and read it when I had time to reflect.听 I hope you will as well and think about what commitments you need to make to strengthen and build your relationships with colleagues.听 Some of the strategies that, personally, I will be working on include:

• Trying to understand my coworker鈥檚 point of view.听 I often assume that I see the world in the same way as everyone else.听 But we don鈥檛.听 We never do.听 I want to work on asking more questions, listening deeper to better connect.
• I want to make time to reach out and initiate positive 鈥渕icromoves鈥� to build relationships. 听Sometimes it just takes one person reaching out鈥�.
• I try to be a vulnerable and authentic leader, but this article points out that this can damage relationships when one person supervises the other.听 I am thinking about what kind of leader you need me to be.
• Being direct and attentive and asking if something is wrong.听 This is the hardest for me.听 How can I heal a relationship if I鈥檓 not directly asking why the relationship has shifted?

“What Sustains You?”

Good morning, team Student Affairs!

This weekend, I was pondering on the nature of burnout and how to manage it from a place of leadership.听 Back in grad school, a faculty member gave us an article on burnout in the helping professions.听 It identified the various stages of burnout and the appropriate interventions.听 All of the interventions were about reminding staff of the vision, the mission, and clarifying expectations.听 None of it was about appreciating that burnout also originates from our socio-political contexts, the deep inequities in our communities, and how 鈥渨orkers鈥� have been framed over the last 100 years.听 So, I thought a lot about 鈥渨hat sustains me鈥� through my personal and professional journeys.听 Why, after over 25 years of adulthood and time spent on college campuses, do I keep on keeping on?听听 I came up with three notions:

1. Only over time do we truly recognize the impact of our work.听 First, I鈥檓 stunned that the first college students I advised have just turned 40.听 But, I鈥檓 even more in awe of the incredible work that they do to shape their communities.听 One of my first advisees is now a leading massive initiatives in his field of practice.听 One of the first undergrads I worked with shapes politics in Virginia through advocacy for voting rights and issues confronting immigrants and people of color.听 Another is a labor activist in New York City.听 And, of course, I love the families that originated as Orientation Leaders, student organization members, etc.听 I hope that even one thing I said, two decades ago, might have had some impact on their lives.听 And if not, I鈥檓 just happy to be in community with these incredibly brilliant souls.
2. Education matters.听 As the child of an educator, I was taught to respect teachers and to value knowledge and learning for learning鈥檚 sake.听 As a scholar of higher education, I now know all of the benefits that higher education sows for folks 鈥� alleviating poverty, increasing mental health and wellness, etc.听 And I know the wrongs that education continues to perpetuate that we must dismantle 听– the teaching of incorrect or partial history, erasing the presence of people of color or LGBTQ folks, and more.听 This is why I feel such pressure to 鈥済et it right鈥� 鈥� too much is on the line.听 As a former student affairs colleague of mine used to say, 鈥淚n every student interaction, a life hangs in the balance.鈥澨� Lives, more correctly.
3. It鈥檚 about the people, silly.听 Education is an inherently humanist practice.听 It is engaged in by people, for people.听 I get so much energy and joy from being around committed, passionate educators and learners.听 I have sorely missed the daily interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members during the pandemic, while also finding that Zoom allowed, in some cases, deeper and more personal connections with folks, built from intention and a shared experience.听 What I鈥檓 trying to say is,听 I show up ready to work each day because of you, because of this amazing community that we are caretakers of in this moment.

To that end, if you鈥檙e looking for a way to get connected professionally, I encourage you to read the message from NASPA Region 4West below.听 This is a great opportunity to present or volunteer!

None of these sustaining influences can heal or prevent the burnout that could come the issues shared above, but it might help me make it to the other side of whatever I鈥檓 dealing with.

In 2001, my staff and I created 鈥淕ood Stuff Boxes鈥� as a team builder during a staff meeting.听 I still have mine today, full of thank you notes, hastily jotted affirmations, and other artifacts of 20 years of positive experiences in student affairs.听 Whether your good stuff box is physical, or even an email mailbox, I hope you鈥檒l save these remembrances and one day reflect on the impact you鈥檝e had on those around you, including me.

“What Pride Means to Me”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

As some of you may know, this weekend was Denver Pride.听 It may have looked a lot different than past years, but you can鈥檛 mistake the sudden appearance of rainbow 鈥�.everything as an indication that Pride was afoot.听 I remember visiting Denver in 2018 on one of my 鈥減re-move鈥� trips and being stunned at how friendly the city seemed in June; it gave me comfort to know that I was moving to a place that valued my identity.听 This weekend, my mind often drifted to the 20+ years of Pride celebrations I鈥檝e attended.听 My first event as an 海角社区 employee was stopping by the Pride March in Cheesman Park to say hi to the Auraria marchers.听 I鈥檝e said before that I still remember when, nationally, we could count the out VPSA鈥檚 on one hand, so that was a meaningful moment for me.

I never saw a Pride March until I moved to Washington D.C. in 1999.听听 When I was in college, we had to drive 45 minutes to the nearest gay bar, so the LGBTQ programming that I participated in was mostly student-run on my campus.听 That first march was鈥�incredible!听 There were so many people marching through the streets of DC, not to mention the big name singers performing on the main stage of the rally.听 This country kid was a little overwhelmed at what, at that time, really only excited in metropolitan areas across the country.

My first Pride March in New York City in 2002 featured newly-elected Senator Hillary Clinton walking down the street in a big straw hat (maybe a nod to Bella Abzug?), a large contingent of folks on motorcycles kicking off the parade, and miles and miles and miles of floats and marchers. I was totally starstruck, again.听 Over the years, my various Pride experiences also included cheering loudly from a rooftop across from the Stonewall Inn for NY State legislators after marriage equality was passed, screaming until I lost my voice for the 鈥淪tonewall Veterans鈥� in vintage convertibles riding down 5th Avenue, and most importantly, days spent with good friends.

This 2021 saw the first ever Pride march and picnic in my hometown of Pulaski County, Virginia.听 And my niece organized it.听 Seeing the pictures on her social media feed, and finding not a handful of rebels but a beautiful array of community members decked out in their finest glitter and rainbows walking through streets where I never totally felt comfortable as a kid 鈥� that was truly something.听 And knowing that my niece, who turned 20 years old yesterday, played a role in bringing that to our small mountain town was perfection.

As I鈥檝e said before 鈥� Change Is.听 Pride, for me, is a remembrance that Change Is happening every day, all around me.听 Change Is a slow forward march to a better day, a day when we can feel included.听 Change Is generational, it is evolutionary, it is intentional.听 Change Is carried forward by millions of every day actions that build momentum for cataclysmic advances in human rights and human dignity.

We are all part of that change.

“Day Without Meetings”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

Does it seem possible that we could already be 5 months into 2021?听 Today is June 1, the official start of Maymester (maybe we need to rename that?), of LGBTQ Pride Month, and (at least in my mind) summer.听 I hope that each of you will find time this summer to recover, to take some much earned and needed vacation time, and to enjoy your family and friends.

Like many of you, the grey skies this weekend meant that I stayed inside and consumed much media.听 From pieces on the , to the , I learned quite a bit about history.听 These were things I should have been taught in school, but never was.听 听Last year, in the midst of ongoing protest and demonstrations after the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others, offered an opportunity to learn about more of our history.听 At 海角社区, we took this day as a day of reflection and asked folks to engage or study in ways that supported their learning and growth.听 A team of 海角社区 student affairs folks even created a repository of readings to support this growth.

I am asking everyone in Student Affairs to observe Juneteenth 2021 on Friday, June 18, 2021 as a 鈥淒ay Without Meetings鈥� for reflection, engagement, and education.听 Here鈥檚 what this could mean:

• I鈥檓 asking everyone to reschedule as many of the appointments you have on this date as possible.
• Your department could organize service activities, a book club, or conversation and dialogue spaces.
• You can use this time for your own individual journey.听 Use the resources our colleagues compiled last year or find your own!
• Use this time to reflect on our anti-racism work this year.听 How will you push forward in year 2?听 What change do you want to make in our programs, policies, and processes?

Then, in our Town Hall on June 21, I will ask a few volunteers to share what they did and what they learned or thought about.听 听听Remembrance and reflection is only part of our work.听 From meaning-making activities like this, we move further down the road toward becoming a true anti-racist organization.

“What’s Next?”

Good Monday Morning Roadrunners!

Does it seem like we are just on repeat these days?听 From the weather (MORE snow??) to COVID (ANOTHER wave?) to the academic calendar (are we dealing with Spring 2022 yet?), my mind and body feels like I鈥檓 on a racetrack, going as fast as I can around and around and around.听 It stinks.听 As I recovered from my second dose of Moderna over the weekend听 (THANK YOU Auraria Health Center and Dolly Parton), I spent some time thinking about what could characterize our return to a new normal this Fall. Here are 5 hopes that I have for us:

• We will continue to integrate Teams / Zoom into the way we gather.听 Lots of our meetings will be more efficient if we virtually gather and the chat feature is incredibly useful for folks with more introverted preferences and for external processors (like me!).
• We will maintain and grow the incredible advances in virtual / digital student engagement and resources that we developed last year.听 Simply put, it is better for students.听 They need the flexibility that is offered by virtual gatherings, digital forms, telehealth services, and more.
• We will keep our flattened communication hierarchies, ensuring good ideas are uplifted from every corner of Student Affairs.听 I have really enjoyed hearing from all members of our team during the weekly Town Halls.听 Your questions, your comments, your critiques have helped me be a better advocate for Student Affairs and students, and have helped all us of understand the different perspectives on our work.听 For that matter, we鈥檒l be keeping those virtual Town Halls!
• We will continue leaning in to 鈥済race鈥� and 鈥渇lexibility.鈥�听 Just because the pandemic may wane, doesn鈥檛 mean that you stop being parents, children, partners, doggy parents, etc.听 In consultation with supervisors, and always ensuring we are meeting the needs of students, I look forward to greater flexibility in the how, when, and where that we accomplish our work together.听听 Don鈥檛 get me wrong 鈥� we鈥檙e not going to close the SSB permanently and let everyone work 2 20-hour days鈥�.but I think there are ways that we can flex to support each other.
• We continue to view our work through the core lenses of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.听 The pandemic era only increased our awareness of the impacts that systemic racism, sexism, etc have on our communities.听 Disproportionate health impacts, disproportionate numbers of women leaving the workplace, disproportionate numbers of Black and Latinx men being killed by the police, increased hate crimes against members of the APIDA communities.听 How does this knowledge CHANGE the way we do our work?听 How are we SUSTAINING inequitable systems by maintaining the status quo?听 We have done considerable work this year toward our equity and anti-racism agendas.听 What鈥檚 next?

Together, we can do this.听 Together, we can redefine how institutions of higher education support students.听 Together, we can make change.

“Monday Magic: Student Employee Edition”

This week is super special because we are celebrating听Student Employee Appreciation Week!听Student employee supervisors, please forward this email to your student employees.

When I think back to my own college experiences, it was the time spent in the Multicultural Center as student staff at Virginia Tech that changed my life.听 That鈥檚 where I met the graduate assistant who told me I should think about student affairs as a career, it is where I started to connect my experience as a gay man to the experiences of folx of color and other groups, and where I tested my skills and found my passion.听 How many of you found your passion through student employment?听 How many of our student employees are using this as a launchpad to their futures?

Student employees 鈥� please know that we ADMIRE you and APPRECIATE you.听 The work you do, day in and day out, supports your peer students and keeps 海角社区 moving along.听 You are truly the lifeblood of this University; we couldn鈥檛 do it without you.

“On Public Art and Public Education”

Good morning, Student Affairs Roadrunners!

While our friends on the East Coast are getting pummeled by 2 feet of snow, we will enjoy a nearly 60 degree day.听 How about that?

This weekend, I took a walk around City Park.听 This was actually my first visit to City Park where I could walk around and enjoy the lakes, the statues, and the gorgeous views of the Denver skyline and mountains in the background.听 But what really stood out to me was the public art sprinkled throughout the park.听 My good friend Sarah, who was chaperoning our dogs date with me, sits on the city鈥檚 public art commission and was explaining how art gets 鈥減laced鈥� in these spaces.听 A certain percentage of development dollars must be spent on public art (policy), and then a community group of stakeholders is convened to sort through submissions and select finalists (process), leading to terrific opportunities for we Denverites to view angry mustangs (DIA!) and gorgeous murals (program).

Policy.听 Process.听 Program. 听听Sound familiar?

These are the three tools that we have to build opportunities for student learning.听 Our policies create the best environment for students to learn, our processes are designed to stimulate growth along a developmental framework, and our programs convey content and opportunities.

But how are our communities engaged in the development of policy, process, and programs?听 Do we convene groups of stakeholders to guide our work?听 Who are our stakeholders?

As you think about the work of 海角社区, I hope you鈥檒l reflect on these ideas.听 We are a work in progress, and no one expects change to come quickly.听 But, I know that if we focus on community engagement and refining policies, processes, and programs to support student learning, we will succeed.

“Dr. MLK Day Jr. Message”

Good morning, Student Affairs Roadrunners 鈥�

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, celebrated across the entire United States, by many as a day of service.听 As we honor today, and Dr. King鈥檚 legacy, we cannot forget our history.听 To learn more about Colorado鈥檚 history and MLK Jr. Day, .

We cannot forget our history.听 When I was a kid growing up in Virginia, I remember clearly when our state began to celebrate this holiday.听 Except we called it 鈥淟ee / Jackson / King Day.鈥澨� Yup 鈥� you read that right.听 The Commonwealth of Virginia had a shared holiday between two seditious generals and a civil rights icon.听 This sort of conflicting reality was endemic to growing up in a southern state.听 When the City of Richmond wanted to place a statue of Arthur Ashe, a hometown hero and tennis icon, on Monument Avenue by the Capitol, both the NAACP and the KKK rallied.听 Neither wanted their hero鈥檚 statue to be next to the other.听 The statue was placed there鈥�and in recent years, many of the confederate statues have been removed.听 In that same era, Virginia went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States in an effort to maintain male-only education at the Virginia Military Institute (with a women鈥檚 program at Mary Washington University)鈥︹��separate and absolutely not equal.

We cannot forget our history.听 Dr. King would have turned 92 this year.听 Anne Frank would have also turned 92.听 Douglas Wilder, the first Black governor (of Virginia) in the nation, just turned 90 (he was also the governor who suggested that Ashe鈥檚 statue belonged on Monument Avenue).听听 Let鈥檚 put this into perspective 鈥� Betty White just turned 99 and James Earl Jones 90.听 Dr. King鈥檚 legacy isn鈥檛 some long-ago tale of courage and justice, it is our recent history, our living history.听 听I saw some posts on social media this week with pictures of the snarling men and women at the integration of Little Rock High School.听 Where are they now?听 They are someone鈥檚 grandmother, someone鈥檚 father.听 Our history is alive and well and must not be forgotten.听 It is the context through which all events unfold.

We cannot forget our true history.听 I believe that our communities must engage in truth and reconciliation processes in order to heal.听 听From to , these truth and reconciliation efforts can lead to renewed trust, community engagement, and a dismantling of false histories.

As you begin your week, I want to draw your attention to Larry Sampler鈥檚 Early Bird message on the threats of violence in our state鈥檚 capital. I also want to remind you that Dr. Davidson has cancelled this week鈥檚 President鈥檚 Cabinet so that we can all watch and reflect on the Presidential Inauguration.

As we begin classes, I know that you will all support our faculty, our students, and our community in the ways that you always do.听 I also know that we all grow weary of managing the concurrent crises of a pandemic, racism, and an assault on our democratic norms.听 You have my deep admiration for all that you do, today and always.

Dear Student Affairs 鈥�

Normally, the Monday after Commencement, we would be relaxing, joking around with each other, and sliding into a more relaxed few weeks.听 But, these are not normal times.听 I know that many of you are deeply involved in registration efforts, helping to get the Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 schedules planned, and still others are planning for the Spring semester.听 Whatever is taking up your time this week, please try to do three things:

• Slow your role (get it?).听 You鈥檝e been working at a heightened pace for months now.听 See if you can鈥檛 create some space.
• Engage your community.听 I really miss water cooler conversations.听 So, maybe call up that colleague that you used to talk to every day and see what they鈥檝e been up to.
• Continue giving grace freely.听 We鈥檙e all making the best decisions we can.听 None of us have a roadmap for getting through these times.

“A Monday Missive: Here Comes December”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

And like that, November comes to a close and December approaches. I hope that many of you were able to disconnect from work-related projects and focus on yourselves and your family.听 And like you, I found it pretty difficult to get back on my 鈥渞outine鈥� this morning.听 Luckily, I have a hungry dog who expects to be fed at 6am on the dot.听 Nature鈥檚 little alarm clock.

I鈥檝e been thinking about two things this last week:听 ethics and anxiety.

I鈥檓 sure many of you noted, with ire, the story that broke last Wednesday of Mayor Hancock travelling to Mississippi to be with his wife and daughter just 30 minutes after he Tweeted out an admonition for Denverites not to travel this holiday week.听 My friends and I had a debate about what is worse, someone who says the right thing and does the wrong thing, or someone who says and does the wrong thing?听 In the student leadership literature, this is what鈥檚 known as 鈥渃ongruence鈥� 鈥� where values and actions align.听听 As someone who engages in the process of leadership, I believe congruence has two merits.听 The first is typically, if our values are right, and our actions are in congruence, we make the right decision (see 海角社区, Fall planning).听 The second focuses on the messages that congruence sense, the example of leadership rooted in values.听 That message is powerful.听 I hope that YOUR work to lead 海角社区 gets as much notice as the wrong decisions others are making during these times.

And now to anxiety.听 What exactly do you do when you are riding a ski lift and your ski falls to the ground far below, somewhere between posts 6 and 7 on the Peak 8 Chair 5?听 Well, if you are me, and new things scare you to death, you sit in a puddle of your anxiety for the next 5 minutes wondering how in the hell you鈥檙e going to get out of this jam.听 Are you going to have to walk back down the mountain in terribly uncomfortable ski boots?听 And worse, will people laugh at you? 听Turns out a few things will save the day:

• The riders in the chair behind you helpfully call out that your ski is between posts 6 and 7, thoughtfully realizing that you were probably too distraught to note the numbers on the posts.
• You realize that there鈥檚 no option but action.听 In this case, you have to get off the lift.听 So, at the top of the lift, you catch the eye of the staffer running the machine, lift your ski-less foot, and point.听 He slows the lift so you can get out of the chair without getting mauled over.
• The ski-lift operator tells you, 鈥淭his happens a few times a day.鈥澨� Ah ha, so I鈥檓 not alone.听 And what鈥檚 better, they have a process to retrieve the fallen ski and get it to the owner.

So, what did I learn?听 Well, in this case, I learned that I wasn鈥檛 alone.听 That hundreds, thousands of other folks have dealt with exactly the same issue and come out on the other side perfectly fine.听 My anxiety was rooted in something other than situational panic; it likely had something to do with shame and dignity.听 But, no one was judging me in that moment other than myself.听 In fact, everyone else in this story was trying to help me.

So, the moral of this week鈥檚 message is鈥�.DO NOT clack your skis on the lift in an attempt to get the snow off of them.听 And, if we put our values out front, act based on them, and remember that most people around us WANT us to succeed, we鈥檒l be fine.听 Not only fine, but we might actually do something that we didn鈥檛 think we could.

“Marathon Training, Covid Fatigue, and Grace”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

This weekend, I was curious about what a group of roadrunners was called, turns out it is either a 鈥渞ace鈥� or a 鈥渕arathon鈥� of roadrunners.听 I鈥檓 choosing the latter, not just because our current work state *is* like a marathon, but also because our journey as a team is about the long-haul.听 If we truly want to make an impact on career success, student engagement, and equity and inclusion, we need sustained effort, over a long distance, with deep respect for training and conditioning.

As we near the fall break and Thanksgiving holiday, many of us are feeling the fatigue of this marathon. 听听I鈥檝e been sitting this weekend with a tweet from Ellie Murray (@EpiEllie):听 鈥�COVID fatigue is real & we鈥檙e all exhausted, but I suspect a lot is actually *decision* fatigue.听 The absence of clear rules, information, and guidance means having to think through our every action to decide what feels safest.听 Good leadership would give us all a break.鈥�

Think about that.听 How many decisions are you making on a daily basis that have real, life-or-death consequences? Now, how are you taking care of yourself while you do this?

My hope for this week is that each of you will give grace where grace is due.听 Give grace to yourselves, your colleagues, our students, and our families.听 Grace does not mean a full lack of accountability 鈥� you better believe I yelled at my parents for going shopping this weekend 鈥� but it does mean understanding that we are all trying to make the best decisions we can with limited information and multiple pressure points.听 Grace is leading with our hearts, in a gentle spirit, with the knowledge that we are now and will continue to be in community with each other during and after this pandemic and crisis.

“Indigenous Peoples Day”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

I hope that you all had a lovely weekend (even with the rather strange weather on Sunday!).听 This weekend, I spent a furlough day on Friday hiking the Fredonia Gulch in Breckenridge (up an old mining road to a cool site) and yesterday hiked the Lock Vale Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, starting out at 5:30am with headlamps on!听 That was a first鈥�but seeing the sun rise over the mountains was a beautiful, soul-filling experience.

I鈥檇 like to wish you all well on this Indigenous Peoples Day.听 On this date, I believe it is important to celebrate indigenous communities, feel the pride in heritage from so many of our friends and colleagues, and honor the painful history of this nation鈥檚 treatment of the first inhabitants of the land.

In Colorado, we have an obligation to engage this legacy, due in part to the local tribal communities and to the fairly recent historic events that shaped our state.听 As we think about how this manifests at 海角社区, I鈥檇 like to propose three ways that our University can and should engage:

1. We have a responsibility to educate students, faculty, and staff 鈥� not to mention new Coloradans like myself 鈥� about the history of the Auraria campus.听听This includes the original inhabitants 鈥� the Ute, the Arapahoe, and the Cheyenne 鈥� as well as the later community of immigrants and Chicanos that was demolished to make way for our campus to be built in the 1960鈥檚.听 Land acknowledgements are a start; we must build this education into Orientation materials, regular cultural heritage events, and our curriculum.
2. We have a responsibility, based in our mission and history, to provide an accessible, culturally-resonant education to the indigenous peoples of our communities.听 This means focused recruitment and enrollment initiatives, building a campus experience that leads to the retention of our indigenous students, and celebrating what 鈥渟uccess鈥� looks like to all students. I would like to see the numbers of indigenous students increase, the presence of indigenous communities on campus grow to include thriving student organizations and events, and further expand our educational offerings.
3. We have a responsibility as stewards of the land.听 海角社区 is an anchor institution, which means that we understand our role as a major institution in Denver and strive to meet certain benchmarks to support our local community.听 How we as a University 鈥渟how up鈥� for our local communities matters 鈥� from an economic development lens, a gentrification lens, a sustainability lens, and an equity and justice lens.

I look forward to the work, to the conversation, and to a future where 海角社区 can fully celebrate our commitment to the Indigenous communities in Colorado and beyond.

Good morning, Roadrunners!

What a weekend, eh?听 From a beautiful, sunny Friday to a smoky Saturday, overcast Sunday, and now a bright, chilly Monday.听 I guess it is true, if you don鈥檛 like the weather in Colorado, just wait a minute.

I hope you鈥檒l join me for our weekly Town Hall this morning at 9:30am.听 The question of the day is this: 听What is one aspect of traditional professionalism that you鈥檝e had to 鈥渓et go鈥� of during the pandemic?听 What are the new rules of professionalism?

I鈥檝e been thinking a lot about what I鈥檓 calling 鈥淧andemic Professionalism.鈥澨� The concept of professionalism has always been fraught 鈥� given its origins in racism, classism, sexism, and heterosexism among other isms.听 Merriam-Webster defines professionalism as 鈥渢he conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.鈥�

COVID19 has challenged us all to rethink how we get our work done, in community with our colleagues.听 The pandemic is calling each of us to think about mental health, flexibility, pace, balance, and technology 鈥� not to mention what we wear each day!听 For the record, today is a 鈥減rofessional sweater and yoga pants鈥� kinda day.

As Student Affairs makes strides this year toward becoming an anti-racist branch, focused on the 鈥渟ervingness鈥� of being an H.S.I., what are the new rules of professionalism we need to build together?

“What We Do Matters

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

Did anyone else wake up this morning, look at the temperature, and think, 鈥淲elp, summer鈥檚 over.鈥澨� As I watered my flowers in the 46 degree temperatures, I realized how much I鈥檓 going to miss the 鈥渟tart of school vibes鈥� that typically connect this time of year.听 But, at 海角社区, we are reimagining Fall!听 I can鈥檛 wait to make new traditions with all of you.

So 鈥� what has Will been thinking about this weekend?听 Well, I鈥檝e been thinking about home.听 I grew up in a small farming town outside Radford, Virginia.听 Radford is home to Radford University, a regional public comprehensive university that has begun recruiting heavily from across Virginia and the country.听 The last decade has seen the University invest heavily in new campus housing projects.听 What I鈥檓 saying is, it is one of those towns that triples in size when the University is in session and there鈥檚 only one big-box store for parents and students to buy all their residence hall materials.听 .听 It was also one of the first universities in the country to announce, emphatically, that classes would resume in person for Fall 2020.

Our actions as University leaders impact not only our students, faculty, and staff, but also our surrounding communities.听 As I鈥檝e tracked the news out of Radford, I am constantly underlining the ethical nature of the decisions we as a University make.听 My parents (who would kill me if I called them elderly, but they鈥檙e almost there) still live in that town.听 My niece is a student at Radford.听 This is personal.听 Radford University鈥檚 decisions directly impact the health and wellbeing of my family.

On the one hand, a University has a responsibility to protect the health and safety of its community.听 On the other, it also has a responsibility as the primary economic driver of many communities. Typically, regional public comprehensive universities are the largest employer in a community.听 What happens if that university lays off a large portion of its staff, or worse, closes?听 听I believe that we make wrong decisions when we think of our current situation as 鈥渆ither / or.鈥澨� Either we reopen and save the university鈥檚 finances, or we move online to protect our communities and learners.听 This creates a false dichotomy where one good is pitted against the other.

I鈥檓 proud of 海角社区.听 I think we have found the 鈥渢hird way鈥� where only select courses are taking place on campus, and we are doubling down on virtual service and engagement.听 Many of you are the leaders who are making this possible.听 You have 鈥渓eaned in鈥� to the 鈥減ivots鈥� and are leading not just our campus, but the entire higher education industry with your creativity and care for students.听 We are proving that we CAN do the right thing and survive, maybe even thrive.

So, thanks for being the dream team who cares for our University, our students, each other, and our communities.

“Week 1, Budget, and Planning”

August 24, 2020

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

Well 鈥� we made it through the first week! 听Thanks to YOUR work, 海角社区 is in a very strong position for the remainder of this semester, and headed into Spring 2021.听 Thanks to YOUR work, our students expressed sincere support, made choices that were best for them, and have returned to the University in numbers we never thought we would see.听 As of this morning, our enrollment is down 5.06%.听 Enrollments climbed all last week, thanks to the work YOU have done to ensure easy pathways to virtual services, on-campus support for social distancing and PPE, and the messages and concern you expressed for what鈥檚 going on in their lives.听 I am really proud to be a Roadrunner today.

A few other thoughts from Week 1:

• I asked the Auraria Police how many reports of community members unwilling to mask-up or social distance:听 None.
• I visited several classes last week, in each the faculty expressed feelings of support and the students seemed genuinely happy and ready to do what they need to do to keep our community safe.
• As campuses across the country are moving virtual, just now, I am even more thankful for the community-wide effort that led 海角社区 to make the decision early to be mostly online this semester.
• The Ambassador Program, ably led by the meticulously organized by Diane Yee and her team, and staffed by so many of you, was a great way to welcome students back to campus.听 That personal touch made a difference.

BUDGET:

Given where our enrollment numbers are, and after speaking with the Budget Office, I am pleased to report that Student Affairs will be able to release eleven vacant positions for hire that we have held since early summer.听 This includes 3 positions in C2, 3 positions in Enrollment Management, and 5 positions in Student Engagement & Wellness.听 In addition, we have been given a tentative 鈥淥K鈥� to hire two NEW positions under the one-time budget:听 case managers to support housing insecure students (1.0 FTE) and justice-involved students (0.5 FTE).

Several of these positions are funded through the auxiliary, so we may wait until Census to move forward to be safe.听 AVP鈥檚 will be informing directors of which lines these are in the coming week.

PLANNING YOUR FALL:

It is still important for us to honor that many of us are working in ways unthinkable several months ago 鈥� fully remote work, fully remote education for family members, and financial situations disrupted by the economic fallout.听 As we celebrate our victories, let鈥檚 not forget that many of our community members are struggling.听 Because I know there will be questions, here are a few thoughts from me:

• At this time, there are no plans to move staff back to working from campus en masse.听 There may be individual cases where a staff member would need to be on campus to fulfill departmental responsibilities, but that is between that staff member and their supervisor to plan out.听 It would be safe for most folks to assume they will be working mostly remote for the remainder of this semester 鈥� with a caveat that we continue to watch the virus carefully.
• Burnout is real.听 We are working differently, creating and adapting constantly.听 There are many helpful resources out there for staff to manage their own burnout, and for supervisors to help mitigate this.听 Everyone is different, and everyone needs different things.听 My hope is that all of our staff will be able to have honest, reciprocal conversations with supervisors on how we are doing and what resources or support we might need.
• Less with Less.听 I appreciate that many of you are having trouble conceiving of how we can reduce the Student Affairs footprint as a result of budget cuts, layoffs, and furloughs 鈥� especially when our students need MORE support now than ever.听 听听I asked each department head to explicitly lay out their plans for doing 鈥渓ess with less鈥� in their annual reports, submitted to me last week.听 I look forward to reading those plans and speaking with the division more in a couple of weeks.

Finally, I will also report that I received an early morning text today from Barb Grogan, chair of the 海角社区 Board of Trustees.听 President Davidson wrote her about our enrollment numbers and she said, 鈥淕reat job.听 Hooray! Thanks for all your hard work and dedication.听 Please thank your entire team for me.听 It is a big deal and a tangible results of all your effort.鈥�

“We Can Do Hard Things”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

鈥淲e can do hard things.鈥澨� That鈥檚 what my pal said to me when I looked at the video of a hiker going up Angel鈥檚 Landing in Zion National Park.

鈥淥n hard days, we do hard things.鈥澨� That鈥檚 what another hiking buddy said the day she and her sister climbed a mountain on their father鈥檚 birthday, several years after he passed away.

I鈥檓 not one for platitudes.听 I think they over-simplify the very real struggles many of us face in our lives.听 And yet, these two comments have stuck with me, and been a bit of a mantra as I look to this coming academic year.听 We are faced with some difficult work ahead:听 the work of ensuring our students and staff are safe and healthy and learning, the work of figuring out how to do 鈥渓ess with less鈥� in the face of budget reductions, and the never-ending work of creating a more just community for all of us.听 As Dr. Sampson told us on Friday, we are all in the 鈥淐AR鈥� of equity; we all have work to do.

So, Will does a 14er, part two.听 I actually summited Mt. Sherman this time!听 There were moments when I wanted to turn back: when my feet couldn鈥檛 seem to find stable ground to climb, when the heavy winds felt like they were going to push me off the mountain, and when my toes felt like they were being pulled off.听 But, we can do hard things.听 And so, I used the same footsteps as the friend hiking ahead of me, our group of four held onto each other to make sure no one was blown away, and we supported each other with frequent rest stops for weary toes and rehydration.听 And we laughed; we laughed every time we chose the wrong path, every time one of us slipped, every time one of us had to make a pit stop (soooo much water).

Those were my strategies.听 As you think about doing hard things 鈥� whatever that is for you 鈥� what are YOUR strategies?听 How do you persevere?听听 During today鈥檚 Town Hall, I鈥檒l call on a few volunteers to share their strategies鈥�so be ready!

“Trekking the Wrong Trail”

July 27, 2020

Dear Student Affairs:

This weekend, I attempted my first 14-er.听 Having read through a few dozen websites, read one (not very helpful) guide, and chatted with folks who had done the hike before, my hiking buddy and I drove to Mt. Sherman.听 We started up the trail, pausing to take in the views (and take some deep breaths), stopped to ask fellow hikers if we were on the right path, and started climbing. 听Something felt wrong.听 The trail didn鈥檛 seem like a trail you鈥檇 take your kids on, and that 30 foot snow bank covering the trail seemed just a little bit too treacherous for beginners (see below!).听 And then it happened 鈥� we hit a dead end, almost 2 miles up a trail. 听We hadn鈥檛 just taken the wrong turn, we took the wrong trail!听 And so, with grey clouds quickly rushing over the summits of Sherman, Gemini, and Sheridan, we descended and called it.听 We鈥檒l conquer Mt. Sherman a different day.

No matter how prepared, no matter how many experts we talk to, no matter how many fellow journeyers we consult, we鈥檙e going to make wrong decisions.听 Our best hope is that we can mitigate those wrong decisions by changing course quickly, learning from our mistakes, and trekking on.听 My hope, however, is that even if we carry out the best laid plans and realize that we鈥檝e gone the wrong way, we seek to find meaning from our mistakes. 听I hope that we identify the moments of joy we wouldn鈥檛 have had had we not made that mistake (like the amazing sound of water rushing 10 feet below my feet as I hiked over broken rock).

Each of us are hiking through the unknown right now.听 We, collectively, are making momentous decisions about the health and safety of our communities and families even while we have no previous modern pandemics to judge our performance against.听 On an individual basis, you are thinking about whether you should send your kids back to schools, weighing if you鈥檒l join a local march or protest, and assessing when is the right time to make that move (both literal and figurative) you鈥檝e been planning for the last few years.

As we support each other through this uncharted territory, let鈥檚 lead from our values (community, access, diversity, respect, entrepreneurship) and practice giving grace to ourselves and each other as we come down from the wrong trail.

“Monday Message”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners 鈥�

Well, right now, I鈥檓 somewhere in a national park on a fun hike.听 Please send me good thoughts that I haven鈥檛 fallen off a cliff or recreated 鈥�127 Days鈥� somewhere in Utah.

It is so important that all of us take vacation time, or even staycation time, this summer.听 We are all learning how our bodies and our minds are reacting to long-term working from home, and I hope you鈥檒l take some time off to recharge, reflect, and respond to your own needs.

In the last month, our Roadrunner community has engaged in significant conversations about race, racism, and systems of oppression.听 These conversations are simply the start 鈥� or the continuation 鈥� of a broader engagement to create a plan of action.听 As you know, I鈥檝e asked each department to engage in conversations on how they can transform through antiracist practice.听 To spur those conversations on, I鈥檓 writing to share three articles (attached) that I would like all Student Affairs staff members to read, and that each department engage in conversations on.听 Special thanks to Dr. Ally Garcia for sharing these articles:

“A Note From Will…”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

For many of us, the weeks (months!) leading up to today鈥檚 Supreme Court decision have been nerve-wracking, filled with anxiety and concern for ourselves and our friends and families.听 On Monday, SCOTUS protected many of us from employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.听 Today, SCOTUS has ensured that our DACA-mented students, colleagues, and friends continue to benefit from the status of this program.听 听听More information will be forthcoming on the DACA-decision.听 I want to thank Gregor Mieder and Dr. Ally Garcia and all of the staff and student leaders in the ISP who helped prepare for the worst-case decision, but can now help the University celebrate this moment.听 There is work still to be done to support ALL of undocumented members of our community; 海角社区 is unwavering in its backing and will continue to lead in this movement.

I want to take a moment to share some personal thoughts.听 As a gay man, I鈥檝e spent the vast majority of my life trying to hide, modify, or otherwise shelter my identity from the judgement of others. 听Many of you know the pain and emotional fatigue of this existence, acknowledging that we live in a heterosexist, racist, sexist, ableist, and nationalist societies.听 It is difficult for me to explain the sense of relief, of being seen, of finally being included that came on Monday with the SCOTUS decision.听 When the national political discourse is your very right to exist, it is difficult not to internalize that debate.听 听12 years ago, I remember trying to pull together a NASPA panel of 鈥渁ll鈥� of the out LGBTQ VPSA鈥檚 in the country.听 We counted 5.听 That I now inhabit this role is, in many ways, one of the greatest surprises of my life.听 听That a member of the 海角社区 Board of Trustees has DACA-status is also a sign of how quickly communities can evolve, when we work to create that change in our communities.

So, there is work to be done.听 Tomorrow, Juneteenth, I will not only be reflecting on the work that it takes for wins like these SCOTUS decisions, but also on the personal, organizational, and civic work that I must engage in to ensure that all members of our community may thrive.听 In addition to the anti-racism training that the Board of Trustees and senior leadership will engage in tomorrow, I will be engaging in the self-work I need to do to participate in dismantling white supremacy.

“Reflection/Action”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

Like many of you, I have gone to bed the last few days with a heavy heart and a full mind.听 I know many of you likely didn鈥檛 get much sleep, engaged in painful conversations with your children, and have been finding ways for to take action that is meaningful to you.听 I know you鈥檙e tired.听 I know you鈥檙e angry.

After the murders of Floyd George in Minneapolis, Breonna Taylor in Louisville, and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, our communities are once again reflecting, reacting, and taking action.听 I want to say thank you to the staff of CESA and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion who have created opportunities for our community to come together. 听听Everyone should look out for more information on forthcoming opportunities in the coming weeks.

As the son of a retired police deputy, who spent 8 years working at John Jay College of Criminal Justice that serves 75% students of color, I have grappled with how to understand the plague of violence inflicted on communities of color by law enforcement, and my personal role in the solutions.听 听I have come to the conclusion that it is up to me, and each of us personally, to unlearn the racism I was taught as a child.听 It is up to me as an individual to advocate for the policy and practical changes that will move our communities toward real justice.听 The violence inflicted on communities of color is systemic, it is a direct result of the racism embedded in our laws, and is unacceptable.

Part of our commitment to career success, student engagement, and diversity and inclusion is engaging in difficult conversations with each other, with our students, and with ourselves.听 I want to lift up the many Roadrunners who are already engaged in this work 鈥� from the equitable hiring practices initiative to the JEDI team coordinating the C2 and CESA approaches.听 A colleague told me this morning that it is impossible to 鈥渄o less with less鈥� in this space.听 And I agree.听 I am committing to all of you that I will do everything I can to stave off budgetary cuts that will negatively impact our ability to support students of color, and students from other marginalized identities and experiences.听 I will be conducting a review of the cuts we鈥檝e already submitted to ensure that we are not jeopardizing this important work.

“Rest is Good”

听That鈥檚 why I enjoy writing these Monday (errrr Tuesday) emails.听 After a weekend of pondering our work, I鈥檓 usually full of ideas and connections.听 So 鈥� if you want a window into my psyche, read on!听 If this is one of 200 emails that came in over the weekend, feel free to skip. There are no announcements contained below.听 馃槉

I hope you all caught the article in Monday鈥檚 Denver Post featuring new graduate Est茅fani Pe帽a Figueroa.听 Est茅fani is a familiar presence in student affairs, from her work in ISP to her leadership on the VPSA student advisory board, her testimony at the State Legislature, or introducing the Attorney General on campus last Fall.听 听I cannot imagine that it is easy for Est茅fani to tell her story, reliving hardships and anxiety, yet I think she would tell all of us how important it is to share our stories.听 听For those of us who know her, we know Est茅fani to be uncommonly kind, focused, and humble.听 Est茅fani is the kind of leader that our communities need, because of who she is, not in spite of it.听 And if you don鈥檛 think this is an act of bravery, go to the Denver Post story online and read the comments.

I was thinking over the weekend about what makes good leaders.听 My personal belief is that good leaders balance critical analysis of situations with empathy for the human experience.听 This empathy is usually grounded in reflection of their own lived experiences.听 A book that helped me do just this is 鈥淭he Velvet Rage鈥� 鈥� a deep dive into the psychology of some gay men.听 This book helped me reflect on the idea of shame, and I tried to figure out the origin story of my own internalized shame and oppression.听 There鈥檚 no one moment, just a series of 鈥渂eing different in this world鈥� experiences that collectively shaped me into the person I am today.

But one stands out, because I think it represents the work we should be doing with our students.听 In the 6th grade, I was a sad little guy.听 I didn鈥檛 have a lot of friends, and in true middle school fashion, I was the convenient butt of many jokes.听 I started seeing the school psychologist (after writing a VERY dramatic poem about suicide, in what I now know was likely a cry for help) who told me that maybe if I carried my books in a different way, I wouldn鈥檛 be bullied.听 You see, I carried a stack of 8-9 books in front of me all day because of the bullying.听 Every middle schooler knows that lockers are some of the most dangerous places on school grounds; this meant that I never needed to go to mine.听 This counselor tried to convince me to assimilate into, rather than addressing the true root of my experiences.

So, what does this mean for us?听 First, it underscores the ethical aspect of doing our work from an understanding of inclusion and oppression.听 Second, I believe that our job as student advocates is to help students make sense of and share their stories.听 Finally, our roles as student supporters has never been more important.听 We cannot shelter students from the storm, but we can join them on the journey to thrive through it.

And, three day weekends = long, 鈥渋n my head鈥� emails from Will.听 I promise not to send another longform note until at least July 5th.听 馃槈

“It Might As Well Stay Monday”

Dear Student Affairs:

I cannot Believe that it took me this long to find out that Cher has a song with Monday in the title.听 I鈥檓 Strong Engouh to rise above this, but If I Could Turn Back Time, I would have used it sooner.听 Welcome to week 7 of remote working!

This morning, as I woke up with sunshine streaming through the windows and birds chirping outside, I was reminded that moments of reflective contemplation are important and necessary.听 I don鈥檛 know about you, but the last 7 weeks have gone by really fast for me; they are a revolving series of MS Teams calls, big deadlines in order to make the decisions we needed to make, and then a couple of hours on the couch at night, still clutching my phone responding to messages and emails.听 Finding 鈥渄own time鈥� is nearly impossible 鈥� and I don鈥檛 have children, a partner, or even a pet that I鈥檓 taking care of!

And here鈥檚 the thing 鈥� it isn鈥檛 healthy.听 For me, the exhaustion that had been setting in on Friday afternoons is now creeping in on Thursday mornings.听 My desire to hop on just one more video call in the evening is at rock bottom (sorry, Mom!).听 But, how do we recharge?听 How do we find peace?听 How do we make meaning of our experiences these days?

Here are the ways that I鈥檝e tried to create time in my schedule for reflection and meaning-making:

• I鈥檓 reading a lot more than I used to, both fiction and current events.听 This weekend, I made my way through 6 鈥淣ew Yorker鈥� magazines that had piled up.
• I鈥檓 minimizing TV, which (let鈥檚 be honest) I was not really paying attention to.听 It was more 鈥渄istracted phone viewing鈥� time.
• I鈥檓 spending as much time outside as possible.听 Listening to birds has become my new thing.
• I make my bed every day.听 This is new for me 鈥� but the ritual and the 5 minutes away from a screen have been helpful.

I know many of these strategies simply won鈥檛 work for you 鈥� your lives are different than mine!听 But, how ARE you creating mindful spaces throughout your day?

“Metered Monday”

Dear Student Affairs Roadrunners:

Well, the parking meters may not be activated in Denver right now, but I鈥檓 asking each of us to 鈥渕eter鈥� our work and wellbeing during this time!

We are all working from a new rhythm, for the second week now.听 President Davidson and her senior staff understand that many staff members are balancing multiple roles, now simultaneously:听 parent, partner, caregiver, volunteer, and professional.听 None of us expect that you are continuing to work in the same ways that you did when you were on campus from 8am to 5pm.听 As we continue to adjust to almost 100% of our branch working remotely (Thanks for holding down the fort, Health Center @ Auraria!), my expectation is that our team will continue to flex into new patterns, supporting each other as we support students.

At 2PM, Mayor Hancock will be announcing a 鈥�Stay At Home鈥� policy for the city.听 We will let you know how this might impact our current operations.

“Student Affairs Updates”

Dear Student Affairs Branch 鈥�

I will endeavor over the next few days/weeks to send you as many updates as I can when there is information that you should know.

• We are encouraging faculty to complete the mandatory office hours virtually with students.
• Some lab classes may continue to meet in person, at the discretion of the faculty member and in consultation with academic affairs.听 AHEC and 海角社区 will be working to clean these spaces regularly and deeply.听 No student can be mandated to attend these lab classes in person.
• As of 3/30/20, I hope that you will work to move online any activity that can possibly take place virtually.听 This includes meetings with students, meetings with external or internal collaborators, or smaller events or gatherings that you deem should continue to take place.
• It is important to note that campus remains open at this time.听 We are constantly evaluating the situation to ensure that we are protecting our students and our employees.

I am reminded that in times of crisis and chaos, we must work from 鈥淕RACE鈥� and 鈥淔LEXIBILITY.鈥澨� We must rely on each other to solve complex problems and enact institutional change quickly.听 We must afford each other the opportunity to make a mistake, to get something momentarily wrong because we couldn鈥檛 see the entire picture.听 We must adapt to the changing needs of our students and our communities.听 We must be attuned to the emotional and spiritual 鈥� as well as the physical 鈥� needs of each other.听 In short, we must continue to embody the values that make student affairs a special profession 鈥� empathy, support, equity, and learning.

I want to offer a special thanks to Steve Monaco and the Auraria Health Center team for their tireless efforts to support the AHEC community 鈥� over 40,000 students and thousands of faculty and staff.听听 Both Steve and Dr. Zorilla are key advisors and leaders for three institutions simultaneously 鈥� not an easy thing to accomplish.听 Please join me in offering them your support and resources as they might require.

“Roadrunners Can’t Fly… Or Can They??”

Dear SA Roadrunners,

Last week, the University launched the Roadrunners Who Soar awards in the Early Bird. The goal of Roadrunners Who Soar is to recognize those outstanding employees who embody our shared CADRE values 鈥� Community, Access, Diversity, Respect and Entrepreneurship.

Personally, I am very excited about this opportunity for our branch and teammates because it gives us a chance to听highlight all the great people and fantastic work that is happening within our organization.

There are two recognition awards 鈥� the听Soar award听which recognizes individual employees and the听Team Roadrunner award听which recognizes team performance 鈥� both celebrate those who are going above and beyond, impacting student and employee engagement positively, and living and modeling CADRE. These awards are recognizing true University role models.

When I think about what we have accomplished this academic year already, I can鈥檛 help but be pleased. What you have shown as听leaders has had a positive impact on those around you. Your projects and initiatives, like听the cross-functional Strategic Enrollment Management team, the changes and impact of CESA, our auto admit process, movers and shakers in the C2Hub, all听are critical to our success, and I couldn鈥檛 be prouder of each and every one of you.

I ask that you consider submitting nominations for both the Soar and the Team Roadrunner awards. We have lots to be proud of, so let鈥檚 not miss this opportunity to recognize our teams and teammates who are role models and embody CADRE.

“Medicated Monday”

Dear Roadrunners:

Well, it is that time of year.听 Many of us are waking up with sore throats, coughs, sneezing, runny noses鈥�.and my advice is鈥�. STAY HOME!听 I鈥檓 following my own advice this morning after 4 days of a sore throat.听 Let鈥檚 hope the hot tea, honey, or Mucinex does the trick today.

But that鈥檚 not the message I wanted to write today.听 This is national student affairs conference season, so I鈥檝e been thinking about the ways that I have remained professionally connected and fed over 20 years of this work.听 I鈥檝e worked at campuses where the student affairs ethos was missing, and campuses that were building student affairs cultures.听 Through it all, my connections with colleagues both on campus and on other campuses have sustained me.听 Here are a few tips that work for me 鈥� and maybe they鈥檒l work for you:

1. Get engaged on your own campus.听 Attend events, advise a student club, join a committee that forces you to think slightly outside of your own area.听 In fact, Thuy has put together a helpful (and growing) ist of Student Affairs events that you can attend to learn more about the work of your colleagues.
2. Identify faculty who are interested or researching topics that you find compelling.听 Have coffee, stop by their office, build relationships!
3. Write about your experiences.听 For instance, check out this piece in Latina Style from Dr. Cynthia Baron.听 Writing is a great way to share your thoughts and connect to a broader community of practice!
4. Join a professional association and get involved.听 Look for volunteer opportunities for networks/knowledge communities or to help plan events. In fact, the NASPA Region 4 West Conference is seeking volunteers right now!听 NASPA has a volunteer portal once you log in that lists all of the various opportunities.

I always look forward to attending the national NASPA Conference each year.听 We try to convene the Roadrunners at the conference for a family dinner while we鈥檙e in town.

“Rainy Days and Mondays”

Dear SA Roadrunners:

Well, Monday is here again.听 This weekend, in addition to making a chocolate cake (which you can view on my!), I spent some time reading the stack of 鈥淣ew Yorker鈥� magazines piling up on my coffee table.听 One article jumped out at me 鈥� a in response to what was happening in Europe.听 It left me wondering 鈥� how are we, as educators, similarly engaged in bringing learners together to debate, process, and make meaning of the 21^st century?

There are so many incredible initiatives taking place to connect our students to civic learning at 海角社区.听 From the American Democracy Project to the service learning program, from the emerging Hart Center for Public Service to Puksta Scholars and Urban Leadership Program, 海角社区 staff and faculty are national leaders in civic engagement and education.

Our challenge, however, will be to resist the old norms of this work.听 When I first started building a civic engagement program in NYC back in 2004, the main concept that guided our work was that students who were familiar with the socio-political context of their college town were most likely to get involved in the civic fabric of that locality.听 It presupposes that most students are from out of town.听 That鈥檚 not us.听 At 海角社区, our students ARE their communities 鈥� Denver, Arvada, Littleton, Aurora, Commerce City, Lakewood, the list goes on.

Our mission should be to engage students where they already are 鈥� rooted in communities and activated in them, 听to support them in making meaning of these experiences, and continuing to grow the tool kit of resources to be champions and leaders in their communities.听 This is how 海角社区 can continue to serve Colorado and Coloradans.

How are you engaging the community in your work?听 From K-12 districts to community-based organizations, faith organizations to activist clusters, 海角社区 can be a partner in building a sustainable, thriving Denver and Colorado.

“Monday Missive – President’s Day Edition”

Good morning, Student Affairs Roadrunners!

Last week, in a meeting, a colleague said, 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 accomplish change in higher education through litigation, you do it by bringing people along.鈥澨� This quote struck me enough that I wrote it down in my little notebook and have continued to think about what it means for our work in supporting students.听 It also hit me personally; I often get frustrated when others can鈥檛 see the same patterns in the data that I see, and feel similarly pressed to create change.听 That鈥檚 me trying to litigate change, not help others see the same patterns and feel the same urgency by bringing them along.

So, here鈥檚 the question:听 鈥淗ow are you bringing people along?鈥�

What we鈥檙e really talking about is collaboration.听 And not the, 鈥淐an I put your name on this flyer so that 鈥榶our people鈥� will come to this event鈥� type of collaboration.听 But true, 鈥淵ou and I both care about this issue, can we get together and think about ways to resolve it鈥� collaboration.听 When was the last time you had the latter conversation?听 What was the last time someone came to you with the former, and you were frustrated?

At the end of the day, we鈥檙e not going to get anywhere by simply being 鈥渞ight鈥� 鈥� we have to engage in the process of change in order to truly transform 海角社区 to support our students.听 I hope you鈥檒l hold me accountable to this, and each other.听 Let鈥檚 be known not only for our 鈥渃ulture of yes鈥� but also for the spirit of collaboration with which we do our work.

鈥淢onday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin’, it was all I hoped it would be鈥︹��

The Mommas and the Poppas said it best鈥�.(although the end of that song isn鈥檛 so great!)

I spent the end of last week in meetings of the Board of Trustees, attended by 4 NEW board members.听 Our fifth new board member was named in the middle of the Academic & Student Affairs Committee meeting.听 I want to tell you that our Board of Trustees is singularly focused on the success of OUR students.听 听We have been fortunate to work with last year鈥檚 new trustees Marissa Molina for the last year, a fearless advocate for undocumented Coloradans and our students, and Russell Noles, who sits on the C2 Development Group and helped connect us to an alumni community at TIAA.听 Of course, returning Trustees Jim Mulligan and new Board Chair Barb Grogan are incredible advocates for the University and our students.听听 I wanted to tell you a bit about our new Trustees and what I learned about them on Thursday and Friday:

• Albus Brooks, former President of the Denver City Council, spoke pointedly about his focus on the success of Black and Latinx men.
• Kristin Hultquist, higher education strategist, talked about her own experiences as a first-generation student and her commitment to changing the narrative about higher education.
• Mario Carrera, a media mogul in our region, talked about how important 海角社区 is in our community and how he鈥檚 excited to take us even further.
• Mike Johnston, former state senator and now head of a foundation, talked about his work as a high school principal and how 海角社区 was, for many students, the only school that reached out to them and how important our early commitment to DACA students was.

As you can tell, this group of Trustees is going to LOVE the work we鈥檙e doing.听 My goal is to make sure that they know about the amazing efforts Student Affairs is doing at 海角社区; work that places us at the forefront of the national conversation on student success.听 As we move forward, I look forward to connecting our trustees to you, your students, and your programs.

“Monday Morning Mood”

Good morning, Roadrunners!

Anytime I say that, I always think of one of my favorite Dolly Parton songs, 鈥�.鈥澨� So, good morning captain!

As we begin week three of Spring 2020 classes, I鈥檓 reminded that not only is this a busy time for those of us who work to enroll and support students, but it is a crazy time for our faculty and academic colleagues as well.听 In fact, one of our faculty members is documenting her experiences by week on Twitter (week 1 鈥� classroom equipment doesn鈥檛 work, week 2 鈥� flu).听 Last week, I presented a 鈥渕eta-level鈥� Student Affairs update to Academic Affairs and Department Chairs.听 In many cases, they were very supportive of the work that we are doing.听 In others, they had sincere, critical questions about our approach or process.听 Which leads me to the response I gave to someone during my interviews in May 2018 who asked, 鈥淲hat is your response to faculty who don鈥檛 believe in the work we do?鈥�

I don鈥檛 believe that any of our 海角社区 faculty colleagues fundamentally disagree with the tenets of Student Affairs work.听 I do, however, believe that many folks with advanced academic degrees are trained to be incisive, critical thinkers who tear ideas apart professionally.听 That鈥檚 their life鈥檚 work 鈥� to break things apart to better understand them, and then to share that knowledge through teaching.听 We work best with these colleagues when we can fully appreciate their perspectives on our work and allow it to change processes, programs, and procedures.

So, my advice is to ask questions carefully:

• 鈥淲hat aspects of this project excite you?鈥�
• 鈥淲hat aspects of this project are you still curious about?鈥�
• 鈥淗ow could this project better support the work that you do?鈥�

I鈥檇 love to hear your thoughts on building better relationships with our academic colleagues.听 What works for you?听 What sustains you?
