Cynthia (Cindy) Heiss, PhD, RDN, CDCES is a Professor in the Department of Nutrition at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She earned her BS in Dietetics from Texas Christian University, her  MS in Nutrition from Colorado State University, and her PhD in Nutrition from Texas Woman’s University. Although  most of her career has been in academia, she has worked as a clinical dietitian, diabetes educator, and consultant. She is currently on the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s Certificate of Training in Obesity Interventions team as a lead facilitator and presenter. She appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show three times (2007 – 2011) for her personal experience with weight loss as well as her expertise on the topic. She served as a coach for individuals the show was following in their weight loss journeys.

Dr. Heiss’s current scholarship focuses on glycemic and satiety responses to various dietary interventions, as well as evaluating outcomes of the Becoming Culturally Aware Leaders (BCAL) Scholars Program, a USDA-funded initiative that supports student leadership, advocacy, and cultural competency development. She is also co-authoring research on the use of storytelling to enhance dietetic practice.

A nationally recognized educator and scholar, Dr. Heiss has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to more than 60 professional conference presentations, served as a guest editor for the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, and received teaching awards at the college, university, and state levels. She was also nominated for the Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professors of the Year Award.
