Thank You!

Thank you for attending the CASE/Department of Mathematics and Statistics Symposium!

Dr. Francis Su

Dr. Francis Su is the author of 鈥淢athematics for Human Flourishing.鈥 聽This book discusses the many ways mathematics can be more than just numbers. 聽What is particularly interesting about Dr. Su鈥檚 book is how it helps many readers reframe their own negative experiences in mathematics. 聽It shows how everyone can do mathematics, because mathematics goes beyond equations and theorems. 聽In a very concrete way, Dr. Su helps the reader cognitively reframe their beliefs around math. 聽Mathematics is framed as a subject that can be explored; it not only changes the world, but it changes the person. 聽Christopher Jackson is an inmate that corresponds with Dr. Su and their correspondences are included in the book. 聽Mathematics is framed as something transformative, and this is starkly illustrated by Christopher and his personal journey. 聽The consistent themes of growth and beauty make the book an excellent choice for the math anxiety workshop run by Rob Niemeyer in Department of Mathematics and Statistics. 聽The therapeutic impact of the text is felt by anyone who has ever struggled with math or anyone who has known someone to struggle with math. 聽Everyone who has read this book comes away feeling more connected with mathematics and less isolated in their frustration around the subject. 聽It is for this reason that we encourage all 海角社区 students to attend Dr. Su鈥檚聽 plenary talk on November 6th, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in St. Cajetan’s.聽
