To comply with Title IV regulations, 海角社区 must report participation verification on the published census date for each course.
To find the census date for your course, check the聽Important Semester Dates and Deadlines or your course syllabus.
What counts as participation?
Each instructor defines what counts as participation in their course. These requirements are outlined in the course syllabus, which is usually available on the first day of class.
If a student does not meet the participation requirements set by their instructor, they may be administratively dropped. Students will receive notification via their student email if this occurs.
What are the non-participation impacts?
Tuition and fees for any course where non-participation is reported will be adjusted according to the course鈥檚聽refund policy. Non-participation may also affect Financial Aid eligibility, Veterans Benefits, and F-1 Visa compliance.

Student FAQ for Participation Policy
Each instructor defines what counts as participation in their classes and explains those requirements in the course syllabus. Participation may include activities such as submitting an assignment or engaging in course activities, depending on the class.
Be sure to review each course syllabus carefully, or speak with your instructor.
- You can find your course syllabus in Canvas, usually under the Syllabus or Course Information section for each class. If you cannot locate your syllabus, contact your instructor for assistance.
- If you are new to Canvas or need help using the platform, visit the Canvas Help and Resources page.
If you do not participate in an academically related activity, as defined by your instructor, by the census date, you may be dropped from the course.
If this happens, your financial aid could be reduced or canceled for the semester. You may also be required to repay some or all of the financial aid already disbursed to your student account, which could result in a balance owed.
We strongly recommend contacting the Financial Aid Office as soon as you are notified via your student email of an administrative drop.
If you聽do not participate聽in an academically related activity, as defined by your instructor, by the census date, you may be dropped from the course.
If this happens, your financial aid could be reduced or canceled, which may create an outstanding balance on your account. You can view your ‘Account Summary’ on the .

If you are administratively dropped from a course due to not meeting the participation requirement, your tuition and fees will be adjusted according to the refund policies for the course.

Reporting participation is a university requirement for all students, regardless of if they do/do not receive financial aid.
If you do not meet the participation requirement in your course(s), you may be administratively dropped from the course, regardless of your financial aid status.
If you cannot meet participation requirements before the census date, contact your instructor as soon as possible to explain your situation.
In some cases, your instructor may be able to offer flexibility, but this is not guaranteed. If you do not participate and have not made arrangements, you can be administratively dropped from the course.
If you know ahead of time that you will not be able to participate, consider dropping the course before the stated refund deadline to聽avoid possible academic or financial consequences.
If you were dropped, but did meet the participation requirements, you can request to be reinstated in the course. This process requires approval from your instructor and the Office of the Registrar.
The email notification will include a link to the Participation Policy Reinstatement form.
You must submit the form within TWO (2) BUSINESS DAYS of receiving drop notification. Do NOT submit a Late Enrollment form if you have a pending Participation Policy Reinstatement form.
If you were reported for non-participation and dropped from a course, you can request to get back into the course through the . This process requires approvals from the instructor and administrative staff from the school or college.
You can also meet with your academic advisor to see if there are any flexible course offerings, such as late start or self-paced online (SPO) available that can apply towards your degree.
IMPORTANT: There are financial impacts regarding financial aid eligibility and tuition charges if you register through the Late Enrollment process after being dropped for non-participation or if you register for late start courses after the full part of term census date. You should contact the Office of the Bursar and Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships before pursuing this option.
If you are administratively dropped due to not meeting the participation requirements, you will receive an email notification to your student email the day after the census date for the course.

- It will not appear on your transcript
- No grade will be recorded
- Your GPA will not be affected.
Faculty and Staff FAQ for Participation Policy
For ALL courses, including shorter part of term courses, instructors are required to report students who have not met the course participation requirements by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the course census date.
LATE PARTICIPATION REPORTING IS NOT ACCEPTED.

If you reported a student for non-participation inadvertently, there are pathways for the student to get back into the course.
REINSTATEMENT:
- Students will receive an email notifying them they have been dropped from the course the day after the reporting deadline. This email will have a link to the Participation Policy Reinstatement Form.
- This requires approval from the instructor AND the Office of the Registrar
Students must submit a Reinstatement Request within two (2) business days of receiving the drop notification.

If a student was reported for non-participation correctly and submits a Reinstatement Request (see above question), you are required to deny the request.
Participation requirements are individually defined by each instructor. You can contact your Department Chair for guidance in creating your definition(s).
It is REQUIRED to list the participation requirement in the course syllabus.
Late participation reporting is not accepted.
If you missed the deadline to report students who did not meet your participation requirements, they will remain in your course. It is highly encouraged to contact any students you did not report to remind them that they are enrolled in the course and have the following options:
- Participate in the course
- Withdraw themselves from the course
- Receive a final grade appropriate to their level of participation in the course
Students who are dropped for non-participation will be removed from the course roster after the census date.
