English (Written Communication) Requirements

You do not need to take the Survey if you are transferring in a College Composition Course or you scored a 470 on the R/W section of the SAT or an 18 or higher on the English Portion of the ACT within the past 5 years.

If your ACT/SAT scores are older than 5 years, you aren鈥檛 transferring in College Composition, or you aren鈥檛 sure if you need to take the Survey, then go ahead and take it (the survey takes less than two minutes to complete).

Once you complete the survey, you will receive an email with your recommended English class.听 The email could recommend ENG 1010, ENG 1010 with Writing Lab (ENG 1001), ENG 1020, or ENG 1008.听 If you place into ENG 1008, you will need to take ENG 1008, ENG 1009, and then ENG 1020 to complete your Written Communication requirement.

If you wish to take ENG 1010 instead of the other choices, please make an appointment with an Academic Advisor or reach out directly to the English Department for additional guidance.听 Visit the English Department website for contact information .听

Once you complete the survey, it will take up to 72 business hours for the English Department to put your scores into our system so that you can register for the appropriate English class.

Which Math class do I need to take for my degree

Transfer Students: You do not need to take additional Math classes (unless you are an Economics Degree) if you are transferring in Finite Math, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Business Calculus, or Calculus I/II/III.

Your math requirement depends on your major.听 We recommend MTH 1310, Finite Math, or MTH 1311 with MTH 1312, Finite Math with lab for all majors except Economics (in which case you should take MTH 1110, College Algebra, and MTH 1210, Stats, or CIS 2320, Desc and Pred Analytics/Business Stats).

听Math requirement for Bachelor of Science Business Degrees听

Accounting, Business Admin, Business Intel, Computer Info Systems, Finance, Human Resources Management, International Business, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, Real Estate students need to complete or transfer in one of the following: College Algebra (MTH 1110, MTH 1109, MTH 1111, MTH 1112, or MTH 1115)听or听Finite Math (MTH 1310 or MTH 1311)听or听Pre-Calculus (MTH 1400)听or听Business Calculus (MTH 1320)听or听Calculus I, II, or III (MTH 1410, etc.).

Math requirement for Economics Majors (both BS and BA)

Complete or transfer in one of the following: College Algebra (MTH 1110, MTH 1109, MTH 1111, MTH 1112, or MTH 1115)听or听Finite Math (MTH 1310 or MTH 1311)听or听Pre-Calculus (MTH 1400)听or听Business Calculus (MTH 1320)听or听Calculus I, II, or III (MTH 1410, etc.)听听AND听Statistics (MTH 1210)听or听Business Stats CIS 2320).

If you are interested in a Master鈥檚 Degree in Economics, please meet with the Economics Department Chair to discuss the most appropriate math courses to take.

听Math requirement for Professional Selling BA Majors

Complete or transfer in one of the following: Statistics (MTH 1210)听or听College Algebra (MTH 1110, MTH 1109, MTH 1111, MTH 1112, or MTH 1115)听or听Finite Math (MTH 1310 or MTH 1311)听or听Pre-Calculus (MTH 1400)听or听Business Calculus (MTH 1320)听or听Calculus I, II, or III (MTH 1410, etc.)

听Math requirement for Entrepreneurship BA Majors

Entrepreneurship majors听may complete any College Level Math class that meets 海角社区鈥檚 General Studies Quantitative Literacy requirement; this includes MTH 1080, MTH 1081, MTH 1210, MTH 1109, MTH 1110, MTH 1111, MTH 1112, MTH 1115, MTH 1310, MTH 1311, MTH 1320, MTH 1400, or MTH 1410.

听How do I register for Math?听听

Transfer Students: If you haven鈥檛 sent official transcripts and/or test scores to 海角社区 Admissions, you will need to meet with an academic advisor, show us your unofficial transcript and/or download your ACT/SAT score report, and we will be able to give you overrides (assuming you meet requirements).听 We will not provide overrides without documentation/proof.

You must meet course prerequisites or score minimums to register for Math.听 Minimum score requirements are listed below.听听AAF/ACT/SAT Scores must be less than 5 years old. If you don鈥檛 meet score minimums, have the course prerequisite, or your scores are older than 5 years, you will need to take a secondary math placement exam.

Below are the minimum score requirements and/or prerequisites to register for Math classes (please see the 鈥淲hich Math class do I need?鈥� section to determine which Math is required for your major).

MTH 1311 with MTH 1312, Finite Math with Required Lab.听

• SAT Math score of 500 to 579;听or
• ACT Math Score 19 to 23;听or
• AAF Accuplacer Score between 220 and 234;听or
• MAT 0300 (or MAT 99 or MAT 55) with a minimum course grade of C-

MTH 1310, Finite Math (without a Required Lab)

• SAT Math score of 580 or higher;听or
• ACT Math Score of 24 or higher;听or
• AAF Accuplacer Score between 235 or higher

MTH 1108, Stretch College Algebra听(this is a two-semester course sequence of MTH 1108 and MTH 1109.听 You must pass both to meet the Quantitative Literacy requirement)

• SAT Math score of 500 to 530;听or
• ACT Math Score 19 to 22;听or
• AAF Accuplacer Score between 210 to 229
• MAT 0300 (or MAT 99 or MAT 55) with a minimum course grade of C-

MTH 1111 with MTH 1101, College Algebra with Required Lab

• SAT Math score of 530 to 609;听or
• ACT Math Score 22 to 26;听or
• AAF Accuplacer Score between 230 to 244;听or
• MAT 0300 (or MAT 99 or MAT 55) with a minimum course grade of C-

MTH 1110, College Algebra (without a Required Lab)

• SAT Math score of 610 or higher;听or
• ACT Math Score 27 or higher;听or
• AAF Accuplacer Score 245 or higher

MTH 1210, Statistics (this class is required for Economics majors)

• SAT Math score of 500 or higher;听or
• ACT Math Score of 19 or higher;听or
• QAS听Accuplacer Score of 240 or higher;听or
• MAT 0300 (or MAT 99 or MAT 55) or any other College Level Math class with a minimum course grade of C-

MTH 1080, Mathematical Modes of Thought (without Lab)

• SAT Math score of 500 or higher;听or
• ACT Math Score of 19 or higher;听or
• QAS听Accuplacer Score of 240 or higher;听or
• MAT 0300 (or MAT 99 or MAT 55);听or
• High School GPA of 2.5 or higher

MTH 1081 with MTH 1082, Mathematical Modes of Thought with Required Lab.听听This class does not have prerequisites.听 Students may register for them without overrides.听听

听I don鈥檛 meet the minimum score requirements or have the prerequisites to take my required math class, what do I need to do?

If you need to take MTH 1210, Statistics, or MTH 1080, Mathematical Modes of Thought, you will need to take and pass the听QAS听Accuplacer with a 240 or higher.

If you need to take Finite Math or College Algebra, you need to take and pass the听AAF听Accuplacer.

Your score AAF or QAS will determine which class you can take.听 If you scored into one of the sections with a required lab and you don鈥檛 wish to take the lab, you will need to take or retake the appropriate Accuplacer and pass with the minimum score.

听What are the Math Labs (MTH 1312, MTH 1082, MTH 1101); why do I have to take one; and how do I register for them?听

Your test score or course prerequisite determines which Math class you can take. You can鈥檛 opt out of a lab if you tested into one.

Math labs (MTH 1082/MTH 1312/MTH 1101) are designed to provide supplemental instruction for the main math class and improve student success rates.听 Usually, they are 1 credit, 50 minutes long classes right before the main math course begins.

Almost all Math Labs/Math Class pairs are on-campus only. If you don鈥檛 want to take the lab or can鈥檛 because you are an online student, you need to take/retake the appropriate Accuplacer for a higher score.

How do you Register for them?听 Labs are paired with main math classes and you must take the appropriate pair together.听 Pairings will have the same section number (MTH 1311 Section 01A must be taken with MTH 1312 Section 01A; MTH 1311 Section 02B must be taken with MTH 1312 Section 02B, etc.).

To register for a Math class and lab, in the main registration screen (after you鈥檝e selected the appropriate semester), add the appropriate Math Lab to your class queue (making a note of the Section number), then use the search again button to add the appropriate main Math class (it will have the matching Section Number), then hit the submit button to register for both at the same time.

If you are trying to register for non-paired classes, you will get an error message saying that 鈥渢his class must be taking with this class CRN number XXX.鈥�

Again, your test scores or transfer credits must have been sent to 海角社区 Admissions (or added by your Academic Advisor), for you to be able to register for math. If your scores aren鈥檛 in, you aren鈥檛 going to be able to register for them.听 If you need help, you can swing by the CBUS Advising Center in AD 210 during our drop-in hours or email your assigned academic advisor for assistance.

听Why do I need to complete math as soon as possible?

Many of our Business classes, including the Common Business Core, require a College Level Math class as a prerequisite.听 Some classes, such as FIN 3300, Managerial Finance, and CIS 2320, Descriptive and Predictive Analytics, require higher level Math (College Algebra, Finite Math, Pre-Calculus, or Calculus).听听These courses are prerequisites for other Business Core (CIS 3320, MGT 4950) and/or major courses (MKT 3010, etc).听 Failure to complete math could result in delaying your desired graduation date or you having to transfer elsewhere to complete requirements as we will not waive prerequisites.

Will you waive Math prerequisites?

No, our Departments and Curriculum Committee have carefully reviewed each of our courses and determined which knowledge and skills, including quantitative reasoning, are necessary for students to successfully complete them.听 For this reason, and the fact that we are AASCB accredited, we will not waive course prerequisites.

Our professional academic advisors are assigned by major.听 We can assist you in many ways including transcript evaluations, referrals to support resources, showing you how to use tools such as Student Workday or Degree Progress Report, problems with instructors, interpreting & understanding university policies, orientation/admissions issues, semester-by-semester planning, APLANs, registration holds, course overrides, graduation checks, etc.,

You can make an appointment anytime (we are happy to talk to prospective students, existing students, readmits, etc.)!听 Prospective students do not necessarily need to apply before you talk to an academic advisor. However, to make sure our time together is spent productively, here are some general rules to follow:

• If you are a transfer student, we will need to see unofficial transcripts and test score reports before we give your class recommendations, course overrides, graduation estimates, etc. Please have copies of these during your appointment. You can find additional transfer information here.
• For students with concurrent enrollment (CE) classes in High School, we need to see an unofficial transcript from the university or college you took your CE class through鈥�NOT your High School transcript. If you aren鈥檛 sure which college or university you took the course through, ask your High School counselor and then get an unofficial copy of your college transcript.听 We will not give course overrides based on high school transcripts.
• If you are wanting to register for classes, make sure you take secondary placement tests (if needed) before your first advising appointment so we can get you into the appropriate math or English class.
• International transfer students, please see the International Students and Academic Advising Section. We can鈥檛 assist you without a NACES transcript.
• If you want assistance registering for classes during your appointment, please check your holds and registration status by going to your 海角社区 Student Hub and checking your Student Profile (Self-Service Banner) under Web Services. If you have holds, you will need to clear them first.听 You can find instructions for clearing holds here. Our professional advisors have very high student caseloads.听 The best way to connect with us is via a scheduled appointment in Navigate360 (learn how to make appointments here).听 We also have drop-in advising support for emergencies and/or quick advising issues/questions.听 Our drop-in hours are posted on the main CBUS Advising Website. They are subject to our availability and can be cancelled with little to no notice due to orientations, sickness/time off, etc.,

CBUS advisors will not do unofficial transfer evaluations without a NACES approved transcript.听 We can鈥檛 verify if you took classes from an accredited university and/or how your classes will transfer in by looking at non-NACES transcripts.

Academic advisors do not determine transfer course equivalency.听 Transfer decisions are made by the Transfer Office and Academic Departments. It is highly likely that you will need to take additional steps such as submitting class descriptions or syllabi for review.听 These steps can be time-consuming so applying and submitting your official documentation early is essential.

While we will assist you with the transfer process, we will not give you course overrides for classes until we can verify you meet course prerequisites. We will also not be able to help you build a graduation plan until all your credits have been reviewed.
